Biography

Born on June 13, 1816, came from the nobility of the Novgorod province . A pupil of the Pavlovsky cadet corps, from which he was released in 1834 to the Grenadier Engineer Battalion , where he was until 1850, and then was at the disposal of the chief of engineers of the Guards and Grenadier Corps. in the performance of the work entrusted to him, he was repeatedly awarded nominal Highest Goodwill.

In 1855, Mr .. Krenke was appointed commander of the training engineer battalion and at the same time was sent to oversee the work to bring the fortress of Vyborg in defensive position on the occasion of the Eastern War .

July 22, 1860 promoted to major general and appointed head of the 2nd combat engineer brigade; in 1864 - the district quartermaster of the St. Petersburg Military District , July 21, 1866 - the head of the 26th Infantry Division , August 30, 1867 promoted to lieutenant general .

In 1869, a painful condition forced him to enter the reserve of the engineering corps, but with the declaration of the Russo-Turkish war in 1877, Krenke, of his own free will, was appointed to the army in the possession of the commander in chief. July 9 was sent to study the path and pave the road through Shipkinsky Pass ; Despite the extreme difficulty in collecting and retaining locals at work, Krenke managed to build an 11-verst highway along the Shipka Uplift from July 14 to August 7, and partly even along the southern slope of the Balkans. When Russian troops occupied Shipka, Krenke joined this detachment, led defensive work from August 7 to 9, and then Shipka defense itself (until August 11); for the courage and discretion shown at the same time he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree. September 8, 1878 Krenke was awarded the Order of St. 4th degree George :

For courage and discretion in battles at the Shipkinsky position, on August 9, 10 and 11, 1877.

Upon arrival at Shipka, General Radetzky Krenke went to Gabrovo to bring him into a defensive state and build a road from Gabrovo to Shipka . From August 22 to September 18 he was at the Headquarters for assignments, and then he was entrusted with the task of maintaining all communications in the area occupied by the Russian army in Bulgaria ; here he showed his inherent tireless energy and special decisiveness in the fight against the most difficult working conditions in a rainy autumn and severe snowy winter.

At the end of the war he was appointed chief of military communications in Bulgaria; at the same time, he was assigned the main supervision of the evacuation of Russian troops from Burgas , and then from Ruschuk and Silistra .

In June 1879, Krenke was again enlisted in the reserve troops in the engineering corps. Returning to his estate in Tikhvin district , he turned exclusively to agriculture; compiled an agricultural encyclopedia: “On Agriculture” (1868; withstood several reprints). In addition, Krenke wrote a popular pamphlet: “Potatoes, How It Benefits and How to Handle It” (1884).

From the military literary works of Krenke, the following works are known: "Defense of the Baltic Coast in 1854-56" (1887); “Memories” (“Historical Bulletin”, August, 1893); in addition, he was an employee of the Engineering Journal.
