He studied since 1881 at the Scharvenka Conservatory with Xaver Scharvenka himself , Philip Rüfer and Albert Becker , then since 1883 at the Berlin Higher School of Music under Waldemar Bargil and Karl Heinrich Barth . In 1893 he defended a thesis in Rostock on the work of the Italian organist Girolamo Dirut .
In 1895 - 1931 actively published as a music critic in the Berlin newspapers Vossische Zeitung, Der Tag, Moderne Kunst, Deutsche Rundschau. He spoke from ultra-patriotic positions, stating, in particular:
Recently, all sorts of Slavic peoples have flooded us with the musical products of their native lands. This can be very interesting in individual cases, but no more than that: the world of sensations of the West and the East is too different for this music to bring us real benefit. I also consider it a waste of evening time for French chamber music. I love and honor the achievements of the French in other areas, I really appreciate them as performers, but as far as musical creativity is concerned, they are the most talented people of all ... ( 1907 ) [3]
In addition, Krebs was an implacable opponent of the music of Franz Liszt and Max Reger (calling the latter, in particular, the composer “without inspiration, without a meaningful plan, without goals and specific tasks”).
Krebs published Brahms' correspondence, wrote the books Women in Music ( German: Die Frauen in der Musik ; 1895 ) and Dittersdorf ( 1900 ) about composer Karl Dittersdorf , review work Haydn , Mozart , Beethoven ( 1906 , reprints 1913 , 1920 ), a popular book on the history of conducting The Masters of the Conductor’s Wand ( German: Meister des Taktstocks ; 1919 ). In 1895 - 1923 taught music history at the Berlin Graduate School of Music.
