The name of the group comes from Dimmuborgir ( Isl. Dimmuborgir ), which translates as "dark fortress." This is the name of the landmark in Iceland - a lava formation, which, according to legend, is the gateway to the underworld [1] . In addition, in the 3rd book of the J.R. R. Tolkien trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” - “The Return of the King” in Chapter 2, immediately after the scene of farewell of Aragorn and Eowyn, Dimmorborg - Mountain of Spirits in Rohan is mentioned.

History
The musical group Dimmu Borgir was founded in 1993 by three people - Shagrath , Silenoz and Tjodalv . Already in 1994, the group recorded a seven-inch record Inn Inn Evighetens Mørke (translated from Norwegian - “Into the Darkness of Eternity”), which was released at the Necromantic Gallery Production . However, the material did not bring the group much success [2] . The band's next release was the debut full-length album For All Tid , which was recorded with two new members - Brunyard Tristan ( bass ) and Stian Orstad (keyboards). In 1996, Stormblåst released on Cacophonous Records . Some consider the album to be one of the most important in the history of black metal [2] . After the release of Stormblåst, the lyrics of the albums began to sound in English (before that all the songs were in Norwegian ). In the same year, the Devil's Path mini-album was released on Hot Records where Shagrat worked. The composition has changed: Tristan was replaced by Nagash (known for participating in the groups The Kovenant , Carpe Tenebrum and Troll ), Stian Orstad, who was responsible for the keyboards, was in the army at that time.
In 1997, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant was released , produced by Peter Tagtgren . The album sold over 150,000 copies [2] . After recording and releasing the album, Astenna joined the group to play the guitar in concert performances, as a result of which Shagrat could only do vocals. Keyboard player Stian Orstad was fired, and Kimberly Goss , known for participating in Ancient , Therion and Sinergy , came to replace him as a session participant. A few months later, Mustis took her place. In the same year, the debut album on Nuclear Blast was reissued, two songs from Inn I Evighetens Mørke were added as bonuses. The same year was marked by the release of the Godless Savage Garden collection, containing two new compositions, two rewritten old and three concert tracks. The release was nominated for the Norwegian Grammy Spellemannsprisen in the nomination "Best Metal Album of the Year" ( The Kovenant with the album Nexus Polaris took the award).
The next full-length album, Spiritual Black Dimensions , was released on March 2, 1999 . After his recording, Nagash left, replaced by ICS Vortex . Two months after the release, a split was released with Old Man's Child called Sons of Satan Gather for Attack . Tyodalv and Astenna also left the group, they were replaced by Nicholas Barker (who previously played in the Cradle of Filth ) and Halder (from Old Man's Child ).
In 2001, the album Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia was released .
Death Cult Armageddon was released in 2003 . Some parts of the album were recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. However, in numerous interviews, Shagrat noted that there were many problems when recording with the orchestra . Two weeks of work in the studio went to correct errors. The group decided not to use the orchestra in the upcoming album and shifted the responsibilities to the keyboard player, Mustis . In 2004, Dimmu Borgir was the headliner of the Ozzfest festival.
In 2005, Silenos and Shagrat , with Hellhammer (from Mayhem ), released Stormblåst MMV , a completely rewritten version of the 1996 Stormblåst album.
On April 24, 2007, the band released the album In Sorte Diaboli . A special edition (Leather Book Edition) was released in the form of a book, inside which were DVDs , lyrics, printed in mirror image and a mirror . Mayhem , the drummer Hellhammer , had to leave the band due to a neck injury, which limited the movement of his right hand. In Sorte Diaboli is the first black metal album in world history to rise to the top of the national charts (in Norway ).
In 2008, a live DVD of the band called "The Invaluable Darkness" was released.
On August 30, 2009, a message was published stating that the group had left Mustis and Vortex [3] . On August 31, this was officially confirmed by the group on the official website [4] . Despite the departure of the participants, the group set about recording the next studio album [4] . The recording was held in collaboration with the Norwegian composer Gaute Storaas, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra of 51 musicians and the Schola Cantorum choir of 38 people. Already 101 musicians took part in the work on the new album . The new album, called Abrahadabra, was released in Germany on September 24th , in the rest of Europe on September 27th and in North America on October 12th via Nuclear Blast Records.
On August 24, the group confirmed that the Swedish multi-instrumentalist Snowy Show [5] would take the place of Vortex , but the next day the musician announced his departure from the group and return to Therion [6] .
In an interview, Shagrat was asked a question about the musicians who will be on the band’s tour, Shagrat said the following:
I do not want to talk about it now, because we did not even start this all. We want people to focus more on those who actually represent Dimmu Borgir - these are the founders, which include me, Silenoz (guitarist) and Halder (Galder, guitarist). And we do not need a group of six people, we decided to exist in a trio format, if only because in the past we had numerous changes in the composition. You can work with people, and then it turns out that it doesn’t work or something else, so we decided to hire musicians for money and see what comes of it, and then decide. Who is in the group now? These are the three people mentioned. We have a solid (laughs) ... established composition, but at the moment I do not want to give any names. |
Regarding whether former members of the ICS band Vortex and Mustis brought to court a case regarding their alleged copyright to songs from previous albums, Shagrat said:
We had to resort to the services of a lawyer in some ways - this does not apply to the trial - but at the moment everything is stable. So there are no big problems. |
Abrahadabra was released on September 24, 2010 in Germany , 27 in the rest of Europe and October 12 in the United States . The session participants were Cyrus (from Susperia , real name Terje Anderssen) on bass, Gerlioz (from The Kovenant and Apoptygma Berzerk ) on keyboards and Daray on drums.
In November 2010, a special collector's edition of Metal Hammer magazine was released , called the “Demon box”, continuing a series of special issues dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Slayer 's Reign In Blood album, the release of the new Metallica and Iron Maiden album . This issue contains the official cap “Dimmu Borgir”, and at the opening of the magazine you can hear the special appeal of Shagrat [7] .
In May 2011, the band performed in Oslo with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Schola Cantorum chamber choir. DIMMU BORGIR is currently working on new material, which is scheduled for release in early 2014 at Nuclear Blast Records.
The group wrote on their Facebook page: “Embraced by the desire to achieve. Very satisfied with the new material, everything is working out very well. Creativity is the power to connect what seems to be unconnected. ” March 7, 2015: DIMMU BORGIR are preparing a new album. DIMMU BORGIR are busy preparing for the recording of a new album, a preliminary release of which is planned before the end of this year. However, the production and release of the album faced numerous delays. [29] This will mark the longest gap ever between each studio release. [30] after various delays, in Oslo and Waken, the orchestra of performances recorded between 2011-2012 was finally released on CD / DVD or Blu-ray format on April 28, 2017 worldwide as a third video release called ' forces of the Northern night. ' Silenoz recently revealed that the group is in the mixing stage of a follow-up disc. [31] Ten songs will be presented on the next album, and they said that they were completed. Nevertheless, the current release of the album was once again postponed to 2018, which will be their first release of new material in almost 8 years.
Norwegian group DIMMU BORGIR will release the new song "Interdimensional Summit" on February 23 as an EP on 7-inch vinyl. The EP will also feature a live version of the track "Puritania" recorded in Oslo.
Vinyl will be available in black, red with splashes and gold colors.
Norwegian symphonic black metallers Dimmu Borgir have announced the name of the upcoming tenth album, whose release is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the band.
The new longplay, dubbed "Eonian", will be released May 4 via Nuclear Blast Records. The 10-track album featured vocalist Shagrath, guitarists Silenoz and Galder, as well as drummer Daray, keyboardist Gerlioz and session singer Gaute Storas, who arranged for the Norwegian choir Schola Cantrum. "Eonian" was produced by the group with the participation of Jens Bogren, who acted as a sound engineer. The artwork was created by the Polish artist Zbigniew M. Bilak (Ghost, Behemoth, Mayhem).
Shagrath's comment: “Eonian” is an illusion of time, all that is and all that has always been. For us, this release also marks the 25th anniversary of Dimmu Borgir, a tribute to our history and the history of Norwegian black metal. "
Public
In 2003, the band members had problems with the police, who found a bandoleer from the stage props in the hotel room they left. Police officers, not knowing about the fake character of the bandolier, called in specialized military sappers [8] .
