Geography and climate
The city is located in a picturesque valley in the southeastern part of the Tsakhkun mountains at an altitude of about 1800 meters above sea level. To the north and south of Tsaghkadzor gently sloping mountain ranges extend, partially covered by forest . The predominant heights in the vicinity of the city are the Techenis Mountains (2851 meters) and Tsaghkunyats (2820 meters). The river of the same name crosses the city of Tsaghkadzor from west to east, flowing into the Marmarik river (a tributary of Hrazdan )
Winter in the valley is mild, the number of sunny days is 270. At the same time, snowfalls are quite significant, which provides strong snow cover up to 1.40 m thick. The ski season lasts from mid-November to mid-April. The average January temperature is −6 ° C. The average annual precipitation is 600–700 mm [1] .
Ecology
Ecotourism is widespread in Tsaghkadzor, in Soviet times this city was at the peak of its popularity. When a person stays in Tsaghkadzor, the level of hemoglobin in the blood increases sharply, which positively affects human health . The sharp production of hemoglobin is explained by the strongly discharged air of Tsaghkadzor, the high location of the area relative to sea level , the relatively low oxygen content, forest terrain and fresh air .
In Soviet times, Tsaghkadzor was recognized as one of the best resort places in the country. Many sanatoriums , hotels , sports grounds were built here. Tsaghkadzor became especially popular when the leadership of the USSR decided that Soviet national teams in various sports should train in Tsaghkadzor before international competitions , since a sharp increase in hemoglobin level here contributed to improving the physical condition of athletes . [2] [3]
Currently, Tsaghkadzor attracts teams of Armenian, Russian and other athletes. Basically, these are skiers , swimmers , weightlifters and many other professionally involved in sports.
The climate and ecology of Tsaghkadzor have a healing effect on both athletes and vacationers and residents of the city. [4] Negative air ionization guarantees longevity and resistance to colds in winter .
History
The historical name of the settlement - Kecharis - in Armenian means "birch grove." In the early Middle Ages, the region of present Tsaghkadzor belonged to the family clan Varazhnuni, whose representatives controlled the estates of the Armenian kings of the Arshakuni dynasty in the 4th and 5th centuries . In the VI century, the territory passed into the possession of the princely family of Kamsarakan. Since the X century, this clan has become related to the clan of Pahlavuni , akin to the Armenian Arshakids. Grigory Magister, the leader of the Pahlavuni clan and subsequently the prince of the Kecharuyk principality (since 1045 ), in 1033 decides to begin construction of the Kecharis monastery. The monastery is named after St. Gregory the Illuminator. In 1051, Grigory Pakhlavuni also built the church of St. Nshan here.
Later Tsaghkadzor successively passed into the possession of the families of Zakaryans, Hagbakyanov and Proshyanov. Vasak Hagbakyan is reconstructing the Church of St. Nshan and building the Church of St. Katogike in 1203 - 1214 .
Since the 17th century, the region has been conquered by nomadic Turkish and Kurdish tribes. Conquerors rename Tsaghkadzor to Karachicek . For most of the 18th century, the region was constantly the scene of Turkish-Persian wars. In 1828, according to the Turkmanchay Treaty , the region is part of the Russian Empire and joins the Yerevan District. In 1877 - 1878, after the next Russian-Turkish war, thousands of immigrants moved to Darachichag from the cities of Khnus, Bazin and Bagrevand.
In the past, the village was also called Darachichag - Turk. “Gorge of flowers” ( gift “gorge”, chichak “flower”) [5] . In 1947, the Council of Ministers of the Armenian SSR by its resolution renamed the city to Tsaghkadzor, which has the same meaning [5] .
