In December 1931, Eliade returned to Bucharest and soon began independent teaching at the University of Bucharest, announcing a lecture course entitled “The Devil's Problem in the History of Religions” and a seminar entitled “The Breakdown of Causation in Medieval Buddhist Logic”. In the same year, his first publications on the philosophy of Indian religions were published in Bucharest and Rome, and the literary debut in his homeland, the novel Isabelle and the Devil’s Waters, took place [5] .

From January 1937 to February 1938, Eliade published a number of articles in support of the fascist organization Iron Guard ( rum. Garda de Fier ). In 1938, the king of Romania, Carol II , who established the dictatorship, began an uncompromising struggle against the Iron Guard and those who sympathize with this organization. The professor of the Department of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest, Nae Ionescu, was arrested, and Eliade, as his assistant, was again removed from work at the university. In June 1938, a search was conducted in the house of Eliade, and correspondence in foreign languages with the scientists who participated in the creation of the journal of comparative religion “ Zalmoxis ” was seized. Eliade escaped arrest thanks to an anonymous call warning of the search. But on July 14, Eliade was still arrested and taken to the headquarters of the Romanian Security Service. In the first week of August 1938, like many representatives of the Romanian elite of that time, who disagreed with the dictatorship of Carol II, Eliade was imprisoned in a concentration camp in Miercurea-Ciuc, where he delivered prisoners lectures on metaphysics and religion, talked about the symbolism of biblical prophets , the Christian esotericism and yoga . They tried to force Eliade to sign a “renunciation” of the Iron Guard, which he never fully supported. due to its adoption of the Western (fascist) ideology. Eliade refused to sign a public renunciation, and since he was already a well-known person in Romania after the publication of Maitreya , he was not tortured except for being constantly turned on in the light chamber. In October, with suspected tuberculosis, Eliade was transferred to a clinic in Moroeni, since the death of the famous writer in the camp was unprofitable for the authorities. Ideas
Myth Concept
The myth, according to the idea of Eliade, having acquired with the desacralization of the times of the ancient Greeks the significance of fiction, fairy tales, played a completely different role in the life of prehistoric (and not only) people.
For a religious person, certain transcendental values, models embedded in myths are of paramount importance. What is a myth? A myth is a certain story that happened, as primitive people believed, with their ancestors, with their ancestors. However, this story did not happen in time, but outside of it. Eliade defines it as follows: “The myth sets out a sacred story, tells of an event that occurred in the memorable times of the“ beginning of all beginnings ”. The myth tells how reality, thanks to the exploits of supernatural beings, reached its embodiment and realization ... ” [10] This story is a sacred model that primitive people repeated in their rituals to get closer to that transcendental, superhuman.
It is worth saying that mythology is inherent not only to primitive man, but the essence of the myth is clearly visible on his example. For example, comparing the modern man and the primitive, Eliade emphasizes that the former “considers himself the result of history”, while the latter sees his origin as the result of the embodiment of some sacred history, mythological events during the “beginning of all beginnings”. It is also important that the primitive man must not only know this sacred history (for example, the exploits of supernatural beings), but also reproduce, actualize it; modern Western man does not always feel the need to cover all events, the whole real millennia of history - this is not vital for him. This also shows the peculiarity of time perception by primitive man - for him it is cyclical, that is, the events of those very initial times can occur in the future. For a modern person, time is linear, irreversible.
Eliade discusses several types of myths in detail. One of them is the myth of the origin, in particular, of medicine. So, the researcher notes the prevalence of the idea of the effectiveness of the drug only in the case "when its origin is known" [11] . This is an important feature of the myth - its creative power. The primitive man, reactivating the myth, as it were, takes part in those same exploits of the ancestors; that is why myths, possessing such a function, play an important role in the life of primitive societies. The fourth aspect of the myth, therefore, Eliade calls the importance of knowing the basics of the world, to learn how to use it for their own purposes. [12] And this is not an abstract idea, but a ritual experience of the essence of objects.
Speaking about the myth of the origin in general, Eliade also notes another type - the cosmogonic myth. Moreover, both of these types can be intertwined in the religion of primitive tribes. For example, the Tibetan peoples, realizing the myth of the origin (for example, genealogy), first mention in their rituals the cosmogonic myth (about the origin of the Cosmos, the whole world). The same applies to healing rituals: in some nations, they also begin with cosmogony.
Eliade emphasizes the peculiarity of this type of myth - "the fundamental unity of all types of" creation "or" forms "- biological, mental or historical" [13] . So, the repetition of the cosmogonic myth is like an “archetypal gesture of the Creator God”, filled with incredible creative power.
For a religious scholar, the meaning of New Year's celebration in primitive societies is also important. This is a kind of renewal, which marks the end of the old and the beginning of a new cycle. The world goes through several stages of its degradation in order to be renewed at the end and reborn again. All this is possible only thanks to the cosmogonic myth, which carries this very future revival. “Although inexhaustibility is quickly lost, it is periodically restored” [14] , notes Eliade. The end marks a new beginning.
Moreover, this myth of the degradation of the Cosmos and its subsequent revival is also characteristic of larger religions. For example, in Vedic culture - the idea of 4 south generations [15] . The essence of this theory is the cyclical creation and destruction of the world and the belief in the perfection of the beginning. "In addition, the same myth is found in other cultures, in particular, in Judeo-Christianity.
Eliade is considered and the myth of a return to the origins, which is familiar to Europeans thanks to the psychoanalysis of Freud. A kind of attempt to return to the state before birth, this myth was used both in primitive societies and in later cultures. The neophyte had to undergo initiation - whether it was reclusiveness or “devouring by a monster” - and reborn [16] . The task of such rituals is to introduce the young man to a new life. It is important to note that, according to the idea of Eliade, this is not just a rebirth; it is spiritual rebirth, growing up.
Eliade also noted another important aspect of the religiosity of some primitive societies. This is the disappearance, the estrangement of the supreme, one God, forgetting about him. Such a vacuum is immediately filled by other deities closer to man. Of course, the memory of God the Creator is stored in the memory of the people, but it is very vague, practically does not appear.
In the case of some nations, there is a myth about the killing of a deity [17] . For example, a deity whose origin is not well known comes to the people; people do not understand him and kill him;
Criticism
