The name of the array comes from "Spechtshardt." Specht means " woodpecker " in German, and Hardt is an old word with the meaning "hilly forest." [1] [2]
Climate and Ecology
Flora and Fauna
Evergreen trees predominate in Vorspessart . Meadows with detached fruit trees ( Streuobstwiesen ) and hawthorn are single-pedigree . [2]
In “high Spessart” ( Hochspessart ), about 85% of which is covered with forests, the most numerous are oaks and beeches . [2] The oldest trees are found in the Rohrberg nature reserves ( de: Rohrberg (Naturschutzgebiet) , [1] ), near the Rohbrunn Weibersbrunn and Mettsergraben areas ( [2] ). [3]
Nordspessart and the front Spessart also have many conifers, as the original wood cover was largely destroyed by the 15th century due to the high fuel needs of the local glass industry. [2]
Spessart is home to numerous species of animals. Deer, wild boars and foxes are quite common. There are also badgers, raccoons, forest cats , lynxes and martens. [4] The beaver population destroyed by hunting has been successfully resumed since the 1980s along several river valleys ( Hafenlor , Zinn ).
There are several types of woodpeckers: black woodpecker (yellow), large spotted woodpecker , middle spotted woodpecker , green woodpecker and gray-headed woodpecker . [four]
