Geography
The level of a natural, not flooded lake of glacial origin, was originally located 30 m below today's. Today, the lake is 7.3 km long and 1.4 km wide, with a maximum depth of 61 m. Despite the artificial nature due to the closure of the Schwartz River, the lake has retained its natural appearance.
The reservoir is operated by Schluchseewerk AG , which manages several reservoirs connected to each other at different heights. The pumped storage station located near Shlukhze has a capacity of 100 megawatts. With the help of pumps, the water of the lake is filled not only with the water of the Schwartz River, but also with the water of the Rhine . The Schluchsee Dam is located at an altitude of 930 m, thus being the highest dam in Germany.
On the northern shore is the community of the same name , known since 1082, as well as its areas of Zebrug and Aha. The community is connected to Titise-Neustadt by the Dreiseebahn railway (a line of three lakes), reaching Zebrug.
History
A concrete dam 63.5 meters high was built between 1929 and 1932. For construction, the natural water level in the lake was temporarily reduced by 13 m in 1930. At the same time, an ancient boat was discovered dating back to 650 and located today in the Archaeological Museum in Konstanz . In 1983, almost all the water was released during the audit, which suspended the usual spa regime, fishing and sailing. However, this rare event attracted many visitors, as the water exposed the flooded infrastructure.
The dam operator and the Schluchsee community often conflict because Schluchsee AG seeks to control the water level based on economic feasibility, while the community sees this as a threat to its tourist attractiveness.
Tourism
Due to the elevated mountain location, the water in Shlukhz is relatively cool in summer too. The pond is popular with sailing enthusiasts , because unlike the neighboring Titise, it is well accessible from all sides. Sometimes on the banks there are nudists. The coastal zone is covered with numerous walking paths, their length is about 18 km. Walking can be combined with a boat trip on the ship St. Nikolaus.
