Muz-TV is a Russian federal music channel. Initially, the volume of music broadcasting was 70% of Russian and 30% of foreign video clips [3] . In 2010–2012, Muz-TV broadcast in the format of a youth entertainment channel about popular culture [4] in cable, satellite and terrestrial networks. After the re-branding on September 16, 2012 at 12:00 pm “Muz-TV” “moved” to a new frequency, changing the concept back to “musical”. At this moment, at its “old” frequencies (including all analogue terrestrial), a new TV channel “ U ” appeared. And since December of the same year, Muz-TV became etheric again, receiving a position in the second multiplex .

From 1996 to 2012, the founder and broadcaster of the channel was ZAO TV Service [5] , and since 2012 it has been Muz-TV Operating Company [6] .
History
The TV channel was founded in political rather than entertainment purposes. Before the new presidential election, the channel was overflowed with calls to vote for Yeltsin : “ Vote or lose. ” [7] [8] . Muz-TV was originally a purely musical TV channel [9] , but over time, in the early to mid -2000s, it significantly expanded the scope of the broadcast, adding to the broadcasting network various entertainment programs that are not related to music [10] [11 ] .
In the initial period of work, in addition to music videos, the air of the Muz-TV channel included the program Klipomaniya and music programs from the MTV Europe block, which subsequently ceased to exist [12] . The channel’s ether was based on the program “Our”, in which, according to its authors, “the freshest, most fashionable and most incendiary clips of Russian performers” were shown [13] . In addition, a part of the personal collection of producer Boris Zosimov’s video clips was broadcast, which continued to be shown on Muz-TV even when their owner was already working on a competing channel [14] .
From June 9 to August 14, 1997, the TV channel was broadcast jointly with the TV channel “ 2x2 ” [15] . At that time, Muz-TV was broadcast from 7:00 to 11:00 and from 19:00 to 3:00 on weekdays and from 9:00 to 14:00 and from 19:00 to 3: 00 - on weekends, and on the screen at that time there were 2 logos at once: in the upper left - “Muz-TV”, all the letters in one corner, in the lower right - “2x2”. On the 51st channel, “2x2” broadcast from 11 to 19 hours - on weekdays and from 14 to 19 hours - on weekends. After leaving “2x2” from 51 Muz-TV channel, it started broadcasting all day.
On November 14, 1999, the Muz-TV channel began its round-the-clock broadcasting, initially limited to the territory of Moscow [4] . Three months later (on February 14, 2000), the round-the-clock broadcast of the television channel was extended to all other regions of its signal distribution [16] . However, despite this, until the end of the 2000s, on the night from Monday to Tuesday, the round-the-clock work of the Moscow version of the channel was attended by a weekly technical break from 1:45 to 6:00.
On February 14, 2000, the Muz-TV channel conducted a global update of the air: the graphic design changed, and new programs and presenters appeared [17] . The first version of the official website of the channel was launched [16] . Muz-TV began to position itself as a “national music channel” [18] and, unlike the MTV Russia channel, which was popular with young people and rather turned to this category of viewers, was guided by a more adult television audience [19] [20] . The famous VJs who worked on the channel in those years mainly include Aurora and Alexander Pryanikov [21] , as well as: Vasily Kuybar [22] , Tatyana Plotnikova [23] , Larisa Pyatnitskaya [24] , Dmitry Shirokov [ 25] [26] , Daria Subbotina , Masha Malinovskaya [27] , Oscar Kuchera [28] [29] .
In October 2000, the channel received the “ TEFI ” award for its broadcasting design in the TV Design nomination [30] . A year later, in 2001, for the same design of Muz-TV, a special prize of the festival jury PROMAX & BDA was presented [31] .
In June 2002, the channel became the property of the Igor Krutoy holding “ARS Records” [32] . In 2007, 75% of the channel’s shares became the property of Alisher Usmanov , 25% remain in the asset of ARS [33] .
Against the background of the channel’s transition to Igor Krutoy, its content has changed most drastically, moving from music and music programs to copyright entertainment programs, TV games and shows of its own production [34] , sometimes diluted with cartoons for Soviet-made children [35] and Soviet children’s and youth films [36] . Among the programs launched during the period of the 2000s, the information programs PRO-Novosti, PRO-Obzor [37] and Zoom with Vasily Kuybar [38] [39] , the comic show Bardachok [40] [ 41] , TV shows “Natural exchange”, “Alphabet”, “Next!”, “Three monkeys”, “Stump-deck” [42] , as well as a line of programs about the personal life of Russian pop stars: “Love Story” (a joint project Muz-TV and Love Radio , as part of which famous persons from Russian show business told their love stories [43] , "Asked" (home visits or quarters celebrities iram) [44] and others. At one time in the mid-2000s, anime was also broadcast on Muz-TV (as on MTV Russia) [45] .
Four Muz-TV programs caused a wide public resonance: the heir of the Shit-Parade anti-hit parade released earlier on MTV Russia called Pip Parade (then- State Duma Speaker Gennady Seleznev expressed outrage over sharp criticism on the air of songs Nikolay Baskov ) [46] , “Visiting Masyanya ” (character creator Oleg Kuvaev filed a lawsuit against a TV channel for illegal use of a cartoon character in his broadcast, and eventually won the case) [47] [48] , “ Money does not smell »With Roman Trachtenberg (viewers and Russian society they were shocked by the concept of transmission, in which the presenter publicly forced volunteers from young people to do obscene moral things - from eating expired products to going out on the street naked) [49] [50] [51] [52] as well as “Blonde in chocolate ”(a video diary from the life of Ksenia Sobchak , who formed her reputation as a socialite [53] [54] [55] , based on the fact that a group of patriotic activists urged Rospechat to deprive the television channel of a broadcasting license [56] ).
Since June 2003, the television channel has been holding an award in the field of popular music - the Muz-TV Award [57] .
In November 2006, by decision of the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, the channel Muz-TV was excluded from the list of channels allowed for retransmission in cable networks, since the copyright to musical works acquired and shown by the channel did not extend to Ukraine that violates the current legislation of the country [58] [59] , but many cable operators in the cities of Ukraine continued to broadcast Muz-TV until 2010. As of April 2019, Muz-TV, like all Russian federal TV channels without exception, is not on the official list of TV channels adapted in Ukraine, approved by the National Council for relaying in cable networks [60] .
On September 17, 2008, the television channel updated the airtime: the logo, inter-program screensavers changed and new programs appeared [61] . The author of the new visual design was Artem Kurenkov [61] , an employee of the Art Department of the 7TV sports channel. Among the premieres of the season, programs of an entertaining nature were again mostly: Battle for Respect [62] [63] , IGOGO, Tuba-Tuba, Nuggets, Krizis-Shmizis, etc. [64] . The following season, the broadcast was supplemented by the programs Mafia , Crocodile, First Fashion Aid, Ours in Las Vegas , Hire Hire [65] .
From April 21, 2010 to September 16, 2012, the channel had a zone broadcast [66] . From the same year, when the channel began to call itself as “MUZ” and positioned as a youth channel about popular culture, there was a tendency to increase in the air of non-music programs intended for youth audiences [4] [67] : “ Top model in American "," Top model in Russian " [68] ," Redecoration "," Redecoration. Russian version ” [69] ,“ Mom, I'm getting married! ”And others. On Muz-TV air from that period, there were replays of television series that were previously broadcast on other TV channels (“ Friends ”,“ Charmed ”,“ Who is the boss? ” "The secret diary of call girls " and others).
In July 2010, a deal was completed on the merger of the television assets Media-1 and AF Media Holding [70] and the new UTV holding was formed, which includes the Muz-TV and 7TV channels (now the Disney Channel ") [71] [72] .
January 30, 2012 in the media appears a message that the channel requires $ 1.8 million from the American company New Wave Entertainment. It turns out that at the "Muz-TV Awards 2011" one of the main headliners was to become Lady Gaga . As an advance, an American company acting as an agent paid $ 1.5 million. However, in the end, Lady Gaga did not go to Moscow [73] .
On July 26, 2012, the leadership of the channel announced its transformation into a new youth channel “U”. The Director General of Muz-TV, Andrei Dimitrov, explained the need for a restart by the fact that by that time the music content on the air of the channel “had long occupied a small place”. For example, in the first five months of 2012, “Top Model in Russian”, “ Charmed ”, “ Hellish Kitchen ” and “10 reasons to fall in love” became popular programs. At the same time, UTV Holding did not abandon the Muz-TV brand [74] [75] . Already in early August, the test broadcasting of the Muz-TV version began on the Express MD1 satellite (80 degrees east longitude). In the test version were only clips. The channel's logo was then white (it was used in the program Moose Charge), after the end of the test broadcast the circles on the logo became multi-colored, as in the broadcast version. The official transition from broadcasting to cable broadcasting took place on September 16 at 12:00 [76] . Many programs and musical blocks have appeared, many of which have been transferred from the broadcast version to a new one, and some have returned to the broadcast. But already in December, having received a position in the second multiplex, the channel returned to the air [77] [78] .
In honor of its 20th anniversary, the twentieth day of each month of 2016, the channel showed archive programs from different years. In October 2016, it was announced that Muz-TV would sell an “all 18-44 years old” audience to advertisers [79] .
On October 17, 2018, the channel switched to broadcasting in the 16: 9 format [80] .
On November 1, 2018, the channel returned to the practice of zone broadcasting by launching the “+7” broadcast in Vladivostok time . On January 16, 2019, two more broadcasting orbits of the TV channel, “+2” ( Ekaterinburg time ) and “+4” ( Krasnoyarsk time ), were additionally launched. Thus, those hourly backups that were broadcast from April 21, 2010 to September 16, 2012 were restored on the channel.

In 1996–2010, the office and broadcasting studios of the TV channel were located in Moscow at the Ostankino television center ( Akademika Koroleva Street 12) [81] [82] .
