History
It is one of the oldest squares in Kiev, originated in the times of Kievan Rus . After the destruction of the Upper City by the Mongol-Tatars , it remained the center of the city until the 19th century. Previously called Alexandrovskaya , Red . The name “Kontraktovaya Ploshchad” arose due to the fact that the merchants of Kiev entered into contracts on this particular square. [2] After 1795, when the third partition of Poland took place and the city of Dubno , in which the contract fair initially appeared, became part of the Russian Empire - its contract fair was moved to Kiev. This was due to the fact that Kontraktova Square was located near the Kiev port , which was the main source of export-import supplies. After the development of the railway network, the importance of the port and Kontraktova Square significantly decreased, and the center of business life in Kiev moved to Khreshchatyk .
Among the attractions:
- Gostiny Dvor , construction started in 1809 by the architect Aloysius Ruski ; rebuilt in 1828 ; in 1980 - 1982, as a result of reconstruction, the second floor was completed, which was laid down in the initial project;
- Kiev-Mohyla Academy ( 1632 );
- Monument to Grigory Skovoroda ( 1976 );
- Monument to the hetman of the Zaporizhzhya Army Pyotr Konashevich Sagaidachny (architects Zharikov N.L., Kukharenko R.I., sculptors Shvetsov V.V., Krylov B. Yu ., Sidoruk O. Yu.);
- Well-fountain "Samson", the first time was built in 1748 - 1749 , restored in 1982 .
The square also houses the building of the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine owned by the former Sinai Compound , now occupied by the National Bank of Ukraine in Kiev and the region, which in 1995 recreated the monastery bell tower . [3]
