The area of ​​the district is 1,624 km². In the south it borders on the territory of the city ​​district of the city of Gelendzhik , the border runs along the Main Caucasus Range . In the north - along the Kuban River it borders the Krasnoarmeysky district . In the west - with the Crimean region , in the east - with the Seversky district .

History

The Abinsky district was formed on June 2, 1924 as part of the Kuban District of the Southeast Region . It included territories of the abolished Abinsk , Mingrel and Kholmsky volosts of the Taman department of the Kuban-Black Sea region . Initially, the district consisted of 8 village councils: Abinsky , Akhtyrsky , Barnavinsky, Merchansky, Mingrelsky , Kholmsky , Shapsugsky and Erivansky.

Since November 16, 1924 - as part of the North Caucasus region .

On March 10, 1932, the Abinsky district was abolished and its entire territory was annexed to the Crimean region [3] .

On December 31, 1934, the district was restored as part of the Azov-Black Sea Territory , and from September 13, 1937, as part of the Krasnodar Territory .

On February 1, 1963, all village councils of the Abinsky district were transferred to the Crimean region , and the Abinsky industrial district was formed from among the village councils of the Abinsky, Crimean and Seversky districts [4] .

On January 12, 1965, the Abinsky Industrial District was abolished, and the Abinsky District was restored to its former borders.

Since January 1, 2006, in accordance with the Law of the Krasnodar Territory dated May 5, 2004 No. 700-KZ [5] , the Abinsky district is endowed with the status of a municipal district, consisting of 8 municipalities: 2 urban and 6 rural settlements.
