Aida (name)

Presumably, the name Aida (in the original French spelling Aïda) was invented by the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariet , who proposed a plot basis for the libretto of Verdi's opera of the same name ^{[3] [4]} . In a letter to Camille du Locloux dated April 27, 1870 ^[5] Mariet wrote:

Don't let the name bother you. Aida is an Egyptian name. Correctly it should be transferred as Aita. But such a name would be too rude, and the singers would inevitably soften it to Hades ^[6] .

In the ancient Egyptian texts known today, this name or any equivalents does not occur directly ^[7] . However, according to the American art historian John Solomon ^[8] , it could have been formed by Mariet from Aet, a hypothetical female version of the name Aet (dr. Greek Ἀετός; this name was definitely known to Mariet from the Greek part of the inscription on the Rosetta stone ^[9] , where the priest Aet is mentioned , the son of Aet ) ^[10] .

Along with this, there is an opinion that this name is of Arab origin ^[11] . Indeed, in modern Arabic, the female name Aida exists (عَائِدَةُ [ʕaːʔida (tu)]). Grammatically, it represents the participle of the real feminine voice from the verb عَادَ [ʕaːda] “visit”, “visit”, “return (s)” and means “guest”, “returning”, as well as “benefit”, “benefit”, “ reward ” ^{[12] [13] [14]} .
