Sutra , it is the Sutta ( Skt. सूत्र sūtra IAST , “thread”, Pali : sutta ) - in ancient Indian literature a concise and fragmentary statement, aphorism , later - codes of such statements. Various branches of knowledge, almost all the religious and philosophical teachings of ancient India, were expounded in the sutras.
The language of the sutra is characterized by figurativeness and aphorism, in the sutras often parables are used.
In Buddhism, sutras are built mainly in the form of dialogues or conversations (usually Buddha , bodhisattva, or patriarch with students), which set out the basics of teaching.
The sutra scroll is sometimes used in iconic images as an attribute of a deity , a bodhisattva (for example, the bodhisattva of Samantabhadra ), being a symbol of wisdom . On the altar symbolizes dharma .
