Fortnight

The first mention of the word “fortnight” to denote a unit of time equal to two weeks was noted ^[1] by Tacitus (56-117 AD) in the work “ Germany ”. In the 11th section, Tacitus describes that the ancient Germans counted time not for days, but for nights. The meetings of the elders were held regularly, either on the full moon or on the new moon , since it was this time that was considered favorable for the consideration of cases. This time span (feowertyne niht) between meetings was also used as a unit of time.

Accordingly, fortnight as the time interval between the full moon and the new moon ^[2] initially was equal to half of the synodic month (thus: 1 fortnight ≈ 14.765294 average sunny days). Later, such a value of Fortnight was forgotten and it began to be considered exactly as 14 days.

• In the VMS operating system, some configuration parameters were defined in micro-fights (one millionth of a fortnight or approximately 1.2096 seconds). Millifortnight (about 20 minutes) and nanofortnight (1.2096 millisecond) are also sometimes used in computer technology, as a rule, in order to deliberately complicate and confuse. The developers explain the purpose of this use so that the user does not change important parameters thoughtlessly, but first tried to understand what they mean.

• A speed of 1 attoparsec per microfight is approximately 1 inch per second (more precisely 1.00432766 inches per second). The speed of 1 Furlong to Fortnight is barely noticeable and is (0.166 millimeters per second).
