Zakat

Zakat ( Arabic: زكاة , outdated زكوة ) is one of the five pillars of Islam , the mandatory annual tax in Islamic law , paid from various types of income and property (movable and immovable) by all independent, free, competent and adult Muslims in favor of those in need co-religionists. According to Sharia , its payment means that the income received and the acquired wealth are not sinful. The exact dimensions of zakat, as well as what types of property it applies to, are the subject of debate among experts on Muslim law [1] .

Zakat is an important socio-economic institution, designed to affirm the principles of justice in society, and affecting many aspects of society. Today, Muslims have opened charitable organizations for the collection and distribution of zakat [2] .

In the subject of zakat, it is important to know and share two concepts: zakat and sadaka . Zakat is the obligatory alms that Muslims pay once a year under certain conditions. Sadaka - voluntary alms, which a person pays at his own discretion and desire in unlimited quantities.

About what to give to zakat

[2: 219] They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say: “They have a great sin and some advantages for people. But there is much more sin in them than good. ” They also ask you what to give to charity. Say: "Surplus." So GOD clarifies the revelations to you so that you can meditate [3]

[6: 141] He is the One who created the gardens on trellises and without trellises, and palm trees, and cereals with different tastes, and olives, and pomegranates - fruits that have similarities, but, nevertheless, different. Eat from their fruits and give alms on the day of harvest, and do not waste. He does not like the wasteful. [four]

[2: 215] They ask you what to give; say: "The charity you provide should go to parents, relatives, orphans, poor and traveling foreigners." Whatever you do good, GOD fully knows about it. [five]

[7: 156] And prescribe for us righteousness in this world and in the Hereafter. We have repented before you. ” He said: “My retribution befalls the one whom I desire. But My mercy embraces every thing. However, I will define it for those who (1) lead a righteous life, (2) give obligatory charity (Zakat) , (3) believe in our revelations and

[7: 157] (4) they follow the messenger, an infidel prophet (Muhammad) , a record of which they will find in their Torah and Gospel. He exhorts them to be righteous, instructs them not to commit evil, permits them all good food, and forbids what which is bad, frees them from the burden and the shackles imposed on them. Those who believe in him, respect him, support him and follow the light that came with him are successful. ” [6]

Categories of property for which zakat is paid

  1. Values: gold, silver, monetary units (including cash, rent, deposits in banks), shares:
    1. 2.5% is paid if gold has reached a weight of 84.8 g (1 Nisab ) and silver is 591 g (and it has been stored with you for a year);
    2. 2.5% of monetary units (including currency and bank deposits) and 4% of shares (other securities) when they reach a value equal to 1 Nisab = approximately 84.8 g of gold (taking into account the value of gold on world markets);
  2. Cattle: only from dairy, breeding and pasture, and its number should reach a taxable minimum. For example, from a herd of 5-9 heads of camels, one sheep is charged; and the taxable minimum of sheep is 40 heads, from which one sheep is also charged;
  3. Harvest: grain and fruit.

The amount of tax depends on the availability of irrigation facilities and the method of cultivating the land. If the land is cultivated and irrigated artificially using mechanisms, then 1/20 of the harvested crop is paid, and in the absence of artificial irrigation - 1/10;

  1. Goods (property intended for sale): zakat in the amount of 2.5% is paid on goods if their price reaches the size of 1 Nisab set for gold (84.8 g) and since the last payment of zakat, such property has already passed full moonlight year;
  2. Property obtained from land, bowels, seas and the sea shelf: thus, 1/40 is paid for gold and silver extracted from mines, and 1/5 of the treasure found.

Modern Fatwas About Zakat

The Al-Azhara Fatwa Committee in September 2009 authorized the payment of zakat via the Internet using VISA smart cards, provided that these funds are guaranteed to be received by those who are destined for them according to the canons of Islam. The permit applies to non-governmental organizations that distribute charitable assistance to those in need. [7] . In Russia, the transfer of zakat through online payments is practiced by the Islamic charity foundations Solidarity [8] and Zakat [9] in Moscow, as well as the Zakat charity foundation in Kazan [10] .
