Biography
He studied at a teacher’s seminary ( 1890 - 1894 ), after which he worked as a teacher in Polish schools. He studied painting at private schools in Warsaw ( 1898 - 1901 ) and in Paris ( 1905 - 1906 ). Since 1902 he participated in exhibitions. From 1906 he lived in Vilna , in 1907 he became, together with M.K. Čiurlionis , P. Kalpokas , P. Rimša , K. Sklerius , one of the organizers of the first exhibition of Lithuanian art and one of the founders of the Lithuanian Art Society. He was the chairman of the society until it was banned and abolished in 1934.
In 1908 - 1912 and later in the countries of Western Europe and the USA he painted, arranged his exhibitions, lectured on Lithuanian art.
In 1919 he settled in Kaunas . He taught at the Art School ( 1926 - 1940 ), after the war at the Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts ( 1944 - 1951 ; professor from 1947 ), Polytechnic Institute ( 1953 - 1957 ). In 1951 - 1953 he taught at the Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR (now Vilnius Academy of Art ) in Vilnius . He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and medals. Creativity
He painted mainly landscapes permeated with lyricism and with a degree of allegorism and idealization of nature: “Neman before a Thunderstorm” ( 1912 ), “Neman Pupils” ( 1927 ), “Two Pines” ( 1930 ), “Forest to the State” ( 1948 ) (all in Kaunas Art Museum named after M.K. Čiurlionis); series of paintings “The Sea of Kaunas Will Be Here” ( 1953 - 1965 ). He also painted portraits (for example, Tadas Daugirdas ), figured compositions, designed books, created posters.
Together with Jonas Basanavičius and Tadas Daugirdas, he entered the commission that developed the draft of the Lithuanian flag, approved by the Council of Lithuania on April 19, 1918 . The most significant features of the project are the basis of the current State Flag of Lithuania . He also participated in the development of the State Emblem of Lithuania .
The total number of his works reaches 2000.
The great-grandson of Antanas муmujdzinavičius - Romas муmujdzinavicius , is a national artist of Lithuania. Currently lives and works in Vilnius.
Museum of the Devils
In the house in Kaunas (built in 1929 ), in which the artist lived , a memorial museum has been operating since 1966 , part of the exhibition of which was his collection of masks and works of small plastic art depicting devils . Nowadays, the only known “Museum of the Devils” ( lit. Velnių muziejus ) is located in the annexe to the House Museum of муmuižinavičius erected in 1982 and has over 3,000 exhibits.
