Biography

He worked as a librarian, a fire safety instructor.

In the second half of the 1960s, he was a member of the “ poets of Malaya Sadovaya ”, was the leader of the literary group of helenucts , with whom Alexander Mironov , Aleksey Khvostenko and others were somehow connected. Since that time he was published in samizdat (the magazines “Clock” , “ 37 ” , “ Transponance ” ,“ Mitin magazine ”, etc.).

Creativity

Issued more than 100 self-published books as a publisher (under the brands “Chamber of Weights and Measures” and “Benefit”); samizdat researcher Boris Constrictor called Erl “Typewriter Paganini” for the unusual sophistication and accuracy of publications for samizdat.

Since the mid-1980s, he was mainly engaged in philological and textological work. He acted as a textologist and publisher of the works of D. Harms (editor-compiler, together with M. Meilakh , collected works in 4 volumes, Bremen , 1977 - 1984 ), K. Vaginov , Alexander Vvedensky , Vsevolod Petrov , Leonid Aronzon and others Laureate of the Andrei Bely Prize ( 1986 , for critical speeches and textual work).

The early poetic works of Earl and other helenucts inherit the oberiuts and are apparently playful in nature, through which the existentially tragic motive of irresistible randomness, absurdity of the world emerges. In the poems of the 1970-1980s, lyrical motifs are strengthened. Earl’s main prose work, the novel “In Search of the Lost Haif” ( 1965 - 1970 ), is one of the first experiments in applying the techniques developed by the world literary avant-garde of the middle of the 20th century in Russian literature: Aleatoric writing, collage , etc.
