Biography
Born in Moscow . After graduation from the Department of Thermophysics of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute ( 1948 ), he worked in the Special Design Bureau of the S.Ordzhonikidze Plant ( Podolsk, Moscow Region ) as an engineer, department head and deputy chief designer. With the direct participation of A. Ya. Kramerov and under his leadership, OKB developed VVER , VK-50 power reactors for nuclear power plants and reactors with a liquid metal coolant for nuclear submarines .
Since 1960, he headed the laboratory at the Institute of Atomic Energy. I.V. Kurchatova, where he was engaged in the development of new directions in the peaceful use of atomic energy. He took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident . Possessing exceptional working capacity and an extraordinary talent of a designer and scientist, A. Ya. Kramerov was one of the leading experts in the field of nuclear technology. His work is widely known in those countries where nuclear power plants are built and operated.
Kramerov is the author of fundamental works: “Engineering Designs of Atomic Reactors” (co-authored by Ya. V. Shevelev and “Problems of Designing Atomic Reactors”).
Until the last days (he died in 2002) A. Ya. Kramerov fought for the further development of nuclear energy , being sure that it was the future.
