Biography

Vladimir Kuzin was born in 1930 in the village of Lampozhnya, Mezen district of the Northern Territory (now - in the Mezen urban settlement of the Mezen district of the Arkhangelsk region ). Participated in competitions since 16 years.

In 1954, at the World Championships in Falun, Kuzin became the first Soviet world champion, winning races in 50 [2] and 30 km [3] . King of Sweden Gustav VI Adolf solemnly handed him a big cup for it, on which was engraved: “King of skis from the King of Sweden Gustav VI”. It was the first and last ski "coronation" [4] . After this incident, the tradition has been established in the ski world to award the unofficial title “King of skis” to a rider who would win at distances of 30 and 50 km within the framework of one World Championship or the Olympic Games. In addition to Cousin, “kings of skis” in different years were: Matti Raivio (Finland), Nikolai Zimyatov (USSR), Gunde Svan (Sweden), Mika Müllula (Finland), Petter Nortug (Norway). (It should be noted in parentheses that on this list of “kings” Nikolai Zimyatov is the only one who managed to win these two distances at the Olympic Games, the remaining “kings” won their victories at world championships, which are held twice as often).

In 1956, at the Olympics in the Italian city of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Vladimir Kuzin took fifth place in the 30 km race [5] and won gold in the relay (4 × 10 km) [6] . Thus, Kuzin became the first Soviet skier to win both the Olympics and the World Cup. In 1957, he was awarded the Order of Lenin for this achievement.

2-time champion of the USSR: 18 km ( 1953 ), 15 km ( 1958 ).

After completing his career, Vladimir Kuzin worked as a coach . He defended the dissertation of a candidate of biological sciences ( 1972 ). Member of the CPSU since 1975. In the mid-1970s, he headed the Department of Physical Training and Sports of the Military Department at the Moscow Financial Institute , Associate Professor , Colonel . [7] For the achievement of high indicators in pedagogical and scientific activity, he was awarded the badge "For excellent success in work in the field of higher education in the USSR."

He died after a long and prolonged illness in 2007. He was buried in section No. 16 "D" of the Mitinsky cemetery in Moscow [8] .
