Description
Many species in this taxon are distinguished by spiny combs on the back and tail , as well as helmet-like growths on the head and throat sacs, which play a large role in signaling the threat and during mating rituals. Many lizards living on trees belong to iguanos.
Iguania is often used as a synonym for Iguanidae . In 1989, herpetologists Frost and Etheridge broke up a large family of iguanovs into a number of smaller families that previously had the status of subfamilies. Because of this, iguanas began to consist of only a few genera. All newly formed families were combined into an infra ‑ order of iguanos. However, almost a decade later, molecular genetic studies showed that the former association into one common family was nevertheless justified.
