whatis

whatis is a unix utility that searches for a given keyword in a set of database files containing brief descriptions of system commands, and displays the results on standard output . Only exact matches of the words with the given keyword are displayed.

The whatis database is created by the / usr / lib / makewhatis command.

Usage Example

  $ whatis xorg
 Xorg (1) - X11R7 X server
 xorg.conf [xorg] (5) - Configuration File for Xorg
