During his school years he lived in Switzerland , where he studied at the private school Institut Le Rosey . Due to his extreme unpopularity, Baudouin's father, Leopold III, abdicated, passing the throne to his 20-year-old son.
Along with Juan Carlos I, Baudouin was one of the most politically active constitutional monarchs of the second half of the 20th century , supporting the reform that led to the federalization of Belgium and the formation of Flemish and Walloon autonomies . In 1990 , when parliament passed a law authorizing abortion , Baudouin refused to accept responsibility for the law for religious (and probably personal: he had no children) reasons; he asked for two days to suspend his powers, and the government acting as regent signed the act.
Since 1960, he was married to the Spanish woman Fabiola de Mora and Aragon (Queen Fabiola). Their marriage was childless: none of the Queen’s five pregnancies ended successfully. Refused to wear the crown even on solemn occasions. Baudouin's successor was his younger brother Albert II .
Memory
In honor of Baudouin named the largest stadium in Belgium - King Baudouin Stadium .
