“Directly in front of me, far away, cutting through the morning mist, floated like a huge dome of Syupergi on the clouds - this famous rival of the colossal Peter and Paul in Rome” (M.N. Zagoskin )
Superga ( Italian: Basilica di Superga ) is a Catholic basilica , towering over Turin at the top of the hill of the same name.
From here in 1706, the future Sardinian king Victor Amadeus II and his cousin Eugene of Savoy oversaw the siege of the city by the French and Spaniards . In the event of a successful outcome of the battle, they vowed to build a temple on this site.
The construction of the magnificent dome construction, which began in 1717, was headed by the late Baroque master Filippo Yuvarra . All Piedmont kings are buried in the basilica, beginning with Victor Amedeus II.
