Sound
Elend's early albums used samplers and synthesizers to create a dense and terrifying orchestral sound. On Winds Cycle’s latest album, Elend’s sound has expanded, and now they are almost completely dependent on acoustic instruments and chamber orchestras, rather than synthesizers, giving them a more complete and natural sound. They also include electronic and industrial elements in some of their works [4] .
The sound of Elend tends to be aggressive, containing severe atonal dissonance, screaming and changing vocals in such a way that it is associated with certain types of modern classical music. Vocalists sometimes pronounce words as in rock songs, and the sound structure gives the elements of art rock and gothic rock music. Although Elend’s music is not any form of metal, Elend’s members associate it with numerous metal recordings on the Holy Records metal label, and their sharp sound led to Elend’s music, which is usually heard by the audience listening to the metal [6] .
“Winds Cycle” was originally conceived as a five-album cycle, but it was changed to a trilogy. In an interview with a French magazine posted on their official website in June 2007 , Iskandar Hasnawi indicated that the costs and difficulties of recording orchestral music associated with Elend made it impossible to continue the Elend project. Both composers will continue personal projects, including L'Ensemble Orphique.
