Bird's-eye
Gourdon's main attraction is the medieval castle , which was built by Louis Lombard in the 13th century on the foundation of the 9th century Saracen fortress . In 1610 it was renewed, and in 1950 it was opened for visits. From the Saracens in the castle remained vaulted ceilings, from the Provence seniors - round towers, huge fireplaces and high walls, from the Renaissance - large windows and beautiful doors . The castle, which until 2011 served as a museum, housed an excellent collection of European and Eastern medieval weapons , armor , tapestries , and paintings. The works of Rembrandt "Self-portrait", Henri Russo . Due to disagreements with local authorities, the owner of the castle sold the exhibits of the castle museums at Christie's auction. [10] Currently, only the castle gardens are open to the public. [11]
On the terraces surrounding the castle, the famous Lenotre , the creator of the park in Versailles in the 18th century, has gardens .
Terraces break off to a depth of 500 meters, directly to the Wolf Gorge ( French Gorges-du-Loup ). The River Lou ( Fr. Loup ) has been breaking through soft limestone cliffs for thousands of years, creating unique landscapes of beauty. The most beautiful forty-meter Cascade de Gourmet.
Gourdon is one of the centers of perfumery on the Cote d'Azur - it is surrounded by fields on which mountain lavender is cultivated.
In 1955, Alfred Hitchcock filmed Catch a Thief in Gourdon, starring Grace Kelly and Cary Grant . It was at this time that Grace Kelly met the Prince of Monaco Rainier . As a result, she became the wife of the prince and received the title "Princess Grace".
This story still attracts a lot of tourists to Gourdon. The carefully restored old houses have been turned into shops selling all kinds of perfumes, local ceramics , and art glass items.
