Biography
Born on August 12, 1934 at the Ponazyrevo railway station (now Kostroma region ). Childhood and youth passed in Svechinsky district of the Kirov region , he graduated from school in Kotelnich [1] .
Father, Mikhail Nikolaevich Kuvaev, was born in 1891 in the village of Medveditsa of the Odoyevsky-Spirinsky volost of the Vetluzh district of the Kostroma province . During the First World War he served as a telegraph operator. He worked as an economist in the traffic service of the Ponazyrevo station, was arrested on April 16, 1938 on charges of anti-Soviet activity, the case was dismissed on January 20, 1939 . Mother, Kuvaeva (nee Ivakin) Pavel Vasilievna, was a primary school teacher. In the fall of 1939 the family moved to Svechinsky district , the village of Ivakiny. The family lived in the Ivakins for a little over a year, and in the late autumn of 1941 moved to the village of Kuzmenki, where an elementary school was opened and where Pavel Vasilyevna was transferred. In the first two years of the war, his father worked at one of the railway stations of the Kotelnichsky district , and in the autumn of 1944 he was transferred closer to his family, to the junction of Yuma of the Svechinsky district, where the whole family immediately moved.
In the summer of 1952, Kuvaev entered the Geophysical Department of the Moscow Polytechnic Institute named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze , who graduated in 1958 . During the years of study at the institute, he visited expeditions to the Tien Shan , in Kyrgyzstan , in the upper reaches of the Amur . In 1956, during the expedition to the Tien Shan, the first story “For Capricorns” was written, published in the journal “Hunting and Hunting” (No. 3). In 1957, as a graduate student, Kuvaev came to Chukotka , the expedition worked in the areas of Providence Bay, Transfiguration Bay, Cross Bay .
After defending his diploma in 1958, Oleg achieved distribution to Chukotka and for 3 years he worked as the party leader of the Chaun geological department in the village of Pevek , on the shore of Chaun Bay . In Pevek, Kuvaev received his first literary experience in the literary association at the local newspaper Polyarnaya Zvezda. The almanac "In the far north" published the stories of Oleg "St. John's Wort" and "Gerneugin, who does not like noise."
In 1960, Oleg was transferred to Magadan to the North-East Geological Department, to the post of senior engineer of the geophysical control unit. Five months later, he became a senior specialist in gravimetry of the geophysical department of Nizhny Novgorod State University. In October 1961, O. Kuvaev realized that in spite of his success, “... he was not fit for a leadership position in the Nizhny Novgorod State University, and he unexpectedly left for Moscow” [2] , on vacation, followed by his dismissal. And yet, it was then that a clear understanding came to him that “the main thing is the work, or rather, the degree of its interest. All the rest are related phenomena ” [2] . At this time, the Northeast Integrated Research Institute was organized in Magadan, and Kuvaev was invited there. He led a group conducting geophysical exploration on Wrangel Island, on the drifting ice of the Chukchi and East Siberian Sea. “Classes in literature,” he later wrote about this period of his life, “became something of a second profession ... the need to write took away more and more power” [2] .
Disappointed in the profession, in the late 1960s, Kuvaev left geophysics and geology and became a professional writer. In his 1968 autobiography , he wrote about it like this: “... all my life experience is still connected with geology. Geology is now a science and production, it is increasingly becoming a clear industrial complex and will continue to develop along this path. The far-fetched stories about ... "akhs" over the field ... often sound insulting to geology. Everything happens because of everyday necessity, but this cannot be elevated to the rank of a purely typical one. And this is precisely what I see in the near future as my duty as a writer, as it is a duty to comrades in the profession with whom we had to work, rejoice, take risks and just live ” [2] . Kuvaev leaves the North, settles in the suburbs. In his works, he tries to truthfully convey the spirit and lifestyle of the people of the North of the late 1940s - early 1960s. This stage of the writer’s life was reflected in the unfinished novel “Rules of Flight” (published posthumously in 1980 with some abbreviations, fully in 1988 ).
The publication of his first works in the early 1960s coincides in time with the growing interest of Soviet youth in tourism, in the romance of long-distance travel. The geological exotics of Kuvaev texts also attracts the attention of filmmakers. At the Belarusfilm film studio, the first of his works is filmed - the story “The Coast of Princess Luska ” (1969). In Kuvaev’s own words, the film brought him all-Union fame, although the author of the story himself considered the film adaptation frankly weak.
After leaving geology and leaving the Northeast, Oleg Kuvaev undertook several extremely difficult independent routes in Chukotka, including in search of the legendary giant brown bear Kainyn-Khutkho [3] and the “mountain of native silver” Pilahuerti Neuk ( Silver Mountain ) [4] (both mythological objects are present in the traditions of the Evens , Chukchi, Yukagirs and Koryak). Some routes, including to the Pamir , were carried out with the support of the magazine Around the World . Kuvaev described this experience in his documentary-geographical works ( see the section “Documentary prose” [5] ).
In 1966 - 1975 he lived in Kaliningrad (now Korolev ) in the Moscow Region at the address: Dzerzhinsky, d. 20 (a memorial plaque is installed on the house).
He died of a heart attack on April 8, 1975 in Pereslavl-Zalessky ( Yaroslavl region ). He was buried in Korolyov in the old Bolshevsky cemetery.
Creativity
Oleg Kuvaev’s prose is distinguished by a rare sincerity of narration, harmony, subtle observation and accuracy in the description of human characters, completeness of images, faith in a person. A characteristic feature of his work can also be called deep respect for the indigenous inhabitants of the North, their experience of survival and adaptation to the natural conditions of the Arctic. Oleg Kuvaev, as a screenwriter and consultant, participated in the creation of a number of documentaries dedicated to the life of the indigenous peoples of the North [6] .
Kuvaev worked a lot on his own style - this is noticeable when comparing earlier works and later ones. Returned to what was not given. Moreover, initially he had a rare and strong talent, the development of which was facilitated by the abundance of material and the desire to convey this material to others. At the same time, he had a rare gift - describing real events not to slide into everyday life, but to create a story, creatively rethink reality, revive it in the space of an artistic text so that it fits there as fully and reliably as possible. For this you need a subtle author’s instinct - and a brilliant command of the language [7] .
The highest success of Oleg Kuvaev’s work is considered to be his novel Territory , which tells about the successful discovery of gold in Chukotka in the late 1940s and early 1950s [8] [9] [10] [11] . Since 1975, the novel has been published in more than 30 editions, including in Roman-Gazeta in three million (two times 1.5 million) print runs. It was published also abroad: in French, German, Spanish, Arabic, English, Vietnamese and Polish. The book was translated in the republics of the USSR, and in Europe the novel was published in 17 publishing houses. It was filmed by director Alexander Surin in 1978 at the Mosfilm studio (at the box office since 1979), the film was purchased by Soyuzfilmeksport for showing in socialist countries.
The success of the film in the German Democratic Republic is largely due to the popularity of the German translation of the novel, published almost 10 times in Germany under the name "Gold Miners" ("Gold Miners in the Arctic", "Gold Miners in Siberia").
The most difficult is considered the last, unfinished novel by Oleg Kuvaev, named after the posthumous publication of " Flight Rules ". Considering the complex problems of changing internal self-identification, the ethical issues that arise when a person flees, which applies to a wide range of situations - from fleeing from a profession or society to forced or voluntary emigration - from an environment where he can no longer stay, the author makes a lot of use his personal experience of leaving geology and the North in 1965-1966 (“Running away - you betray”). The story “Someone must gurgle” and the story “To you and immediately back” are also devoted to similar problems.
Other, much more dominant themes raised in the novel are collectivization in Chukotka, which took place only in the 1960s, which took on very peculiar forms there due to the type of social structure of the Chukchi - see, for example, Yuri Rytkheu ’s novel “ A Dream at the Beginning of the Fog ” , - and the topic of the need for trust in people, even those at the bottom of the social ladder - for example, to “ scourges ”. The last topic is also the main one in the stories “Anyutka, Khysh, the ferocious Makaveev”, “Three hundred years after the rainbow” [12] and the novel “Spring Hunting for Geese”.
The novel “ The Bird of Captain Ross ” (1968), deeply revised in 1971-1973, was also widely known. simultaneously with the creation of a script for its adaptation (two-part television film " Going Beyond the Horizon ", directed by Nikolai Kalinin , 1972). The revised version was called " Triple Polar Story " and is, in fact, a detailed literary script of the film.
The story is devoted to the problems of a person searching for his purpose in life, gaining the ability and will to “live according to a dream”. It tells the story of the search for the habitat of the legendary pink seagull by a young man who is rapidly losing his sight as a result of a ski injury, which led to the complete collapse of his sports career. In the text of the story, the hero sings the song of Alexander Gorodnitsky "Pirate" (1962) [13] . And in his other works, Oleg Kuvaev repeatedly quoted the lines of Gorodnitsky, well known to him, who had worked for many years in geophysical expeditions in the Arctic, so when preparing the three-volume collected works of Kuvaev in the publishing house “Fiction” in 2005, the publishers really wanted Alexander Moiseevich to write the foreword to the three-volume [14] , but for a number of reasons this idea was not implemented.

Answering the questionnaire of the Magadan television in 1973, Kuvaev wrote:
| Fussing with the movies I started with documentaries. To combine geographical films, one-part color was shot. People of the tundra and the sea about Chukotka and several stories. They all marched across the All-Union Screen and Central Heating . Then, together with the director Alexei Saltykov, he wrote the script for the story the Azov version . The script was crap, and Mosfilm rightly refused it, paying us, however, our work. Then a tape was shot based on the story Coast of Princess Luska and a film based on the story Bird of Captain Ross , which has nothing to do with the story. <...> But the profession of a screenwriter, it seems to me, is more a character trait and mastery of the craft than literary "talent and even more so prose. In addition, cinema is a collective work. I’m an individualist, I am not capable of co-authorship and it’s very difficult for me to cinema. Perhaps both Films appeared only because the Belarusfilm studio had an attentive and friendly attitude towards me, but nevertheless it must be said that I took the cheapest route, not fulfilling the duty of a screenwriter, I meekly wrote numerous scenarios, spent a lot of time in literature nor looked (afraid to spoil the sense of smell). Then he walks away. As a result, on the screen, I saw or what I would like to, or the opposite of what I would like to. This also applies to the film Going beyond the horizon , both movies I think is very weak. Since the directors in both cases were young guys, I take a large share of the blame for the weakness on myself. |

Outwardly, it differs from it in blue bindings and a dust jacket with a map of Chukotka and two portraits of the author, common to all three volumes. The publisher’s appeal says: “This three-volume edition of Oleg Kuvaev’s works is somewhat different from the first one published in the publishing house“ Fiction ”in 2005. Textual problems have been resolved due to lack of time that were not resolved in preparing the first edition. All texts were reconciled with manuscripts (authorized copies), the identified errors that were made for various reasons (including in earlier editions) were eliminated. In the book “Baring the Soul” several newly discovered letters were added (the limited volume volume didn’t allow to add anymore), personalities were specified.
