Biography

Knopf's father was a judge in Bruges , he belonged to an aristocratic Austrian family who moved to Belgium in the 16th century. Knopf grew up in Bruges, later moved with his parents to Brussels and, at the insistence of his father, first studied law at the Free University of Brussels , but soon transferred to the Brussels Academy of Arts , where he began his career as a landscape painter and portraitist . His teacher was Xavier Mellery .

In 1877, he visited Paris , where he was greatly impressed by Eugene Delacroix . In England, he met with pre-Raphaelites , who had a great influence on his style - Burne-Jones , Rossetti , Watts . According to Philip Julian, this is "one of those rare decadents that are artists and aesthetes." He enters the image of a social dandy: “Very penetrating metal eyes, a slightly pointed chin, a contemptuous mouth ... straight posture, immaculate costume, simplicity of manners. Aversion to carelessness. Yesterday's pastor, almost turned into a dandy. " This is what Verharn sees him [1] .

In 1878, at the World Exhibition in Paris, he met the artist Gustave Moreau and later turned to symbolism. He is considered one of the founders of Society XX . In 1892, Knopf's works participated in the Salon de la Rosenkreuzer | Rose-Croix , as well as in the exhibition of the Vienna Secession . For forty years, the artist reproduced Bruges in numerous series, from memory and from photographs. Often he portrayed an absolutely deserted quarter, deserted, but neat and well-kept, with no signs of flora and fauna, buildings immersed in silent counting of their own bricks and particles. Despite its closure, over time, Knopf received recognition and honor. Later, he was even awarded the Belgian Order of Leopold .

In his paintings, Knopf chooses the dark, slightly morbid (painful, deadly) tones with which he holds mystical fantasies on the canvas. Knoopf primarily influenced German symbolism, for example, Franz von Stuck , and Jugendstil . In the paintings of Knopf, there are often female images in the form of sphinxes and chimeras : “The Sleeping Harpy”, “Loneliness” (1894) and “Art, or the Tenderness of the Sphinx” (1896). His work is not limited to painting - he was also engaged in sculpture, pastel, tinted drawing, engraving, decorative design of the theater “De la Monna” in Brussels, painted portraits and landscapes and created illustrations.
