History
The square appeared in Barnaul in 1914 , when the construction of the railway station building began (architect K.K. Lygin ). The territory in front of him began to bear the corresponding name - Station Square. In the 1940s – 1950s, the Builders Avenue, which bounds the area from the east, began to be actively used as a highway connecting the Pavlovsky tract and the city center. A railway club and Lokomotiv stadium appeared.
In 1971, the city’s largest cinema, Mir , was opened here. In 1971 - 1975, on the site of the former club, an architectural and monumental ensemble was formed in honor of the victory in the Great Patriotic War - a 24-meter stele was installed on a granite pedestal and a concrete redoubt in the form of a ring torn from both sides, as well as a 6th farewell group meters. The memorial complex includes: a square, 8 chalices with the Eternal Flame (by type of service), 14 thousand names of the dead soldiers of the Altai Territory and Heroes of the Soviet Union , carved on the walls of the redoubt.
On May 8, 1981, the square got its modern name. In 1983, in the area of intersection with Krasnoarmeysky Prospekt, a 12-story Barnaul Hotel was built. In 1995, a T-34 tank was installed in front of the Mir cinema, and in 2005 the platform in front of the cinema was renamed the Stalingrad Defenders Boulevard.
