History
The stamp was released on September 30, 1843. Printed by the company "Lithograph Schmid". Was in postal circulation until September 30, 1854.
“Double Geneva” is a divisible stamp [1] - an interesting attempt to provide two postal districts of Geneva with one tariff using different stamps. If the letter was sent within the city district of Geneva, then for this purpose any half of the stamp with a nominal of 5 centimes was cut off and a double mark with a nominal of 10 centimes was paid for sending letters within the borders of the canton.
"Double Geneva" has sold only about 6 thousand pieces. This is explained by the fact that after the release of stamps, the population reacted very negatively to this innovation. The fact is that before the introduction of stamps, the cost of sending the letter was paid by the addressee. Therefore, many considered it impolite to frankly use letters with stamps, fearing that the addressee might get the impression that he did not have the means to pay for sending the letter. To increase the sales of stamps, the post office in 1845 sold 10 pieces of the “Double Geneva” worth 1 franc for 85 rappins.
Sometimes, due to inattention, “Double Geneva” was cut incorrectly. Known copies, consisting of two vertically arranged one above the other halves or horizontally interconnected right and left halves of the mark. Such copies are extremely rare and are very highly valued in catalogs .
