Pan-star1

Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) is an American automatic telescope with a mirror diameter of 1.8 meters with penetration up to the 22nd magnitude [1] . Built on top of the Hawaiian volcano Haleakala in order to detect outbreaks of supernovae and new stars, brown dwarfs , as well as asteroids that can threaten the Earth . The observatory code is “F51” .

The object is the first telescope of the Pan-STARRS program. It is planned that the telescope will work for 3.5 years at its current location, and then will be transferred to the Mauna Kea volcano on the island of Hawaii, along with the other three Pan-STARRS telescopes built by then. [2]

In 2007, it was equipped with a digital camera, which has the largest (in 2007) photosensitive sensor in the world.

  • camera diameter: 40 cm.
  • Resolution: 1.4 billion pixels.

Every night, the telescope will receive terabytes of data that will be sent via fiber-optic network for analysis to the Maui computer center.

At the moment (October 2009) PS1 is being tested and debugged equipment. In a matter of weeks, a telescope in normal mode will launch a sky survey to search for near-Earth asteroids . [3]

The location of PS1 is geographically optimal for astronomical observations due to the purity of air and low average annual cloud cover.

On May 13, 2010, the telescope began conducting research observations. The field of view of the instrument (10 sq. Gr.) Is 40 times larger than the angular dimensions of the moon (0.25 sq. Gr.). The telescope is controlled by a consortium of 10 scientific institutions. The 1.4-gigapixel camera will take 500 shots every night, which will be 4 terabytes of data per night. An automatic search system will detect all moving and changing brightness objects. In the next 3 years, PS1 is expected to detect about 100,000 new asteroids, compile a catalog of 5 billion stars and 500 million galaxies. A map of 75% of the celestial sphere, available for observation from the Hawaiian Islands, will be compiled. [4] The penetration of PS1 is 22.5 stars. led. in the filter R. [5]
