Belongs to the few Shakespeare's plays that can be accurately dated. The prologue of Act II contains an indication of the shape (“circle of wood”) of the Globus Theater, built in 1599 . The prologue of Act V contains a topical allusion to the campaign of Count Essex in Ireland ), referring to the spring-summer of 1599. It follows that the play was written and first staged in the Globe in mid-1599 (in any case, before the return of Essex ).
Shakespeare's Chronicle Rank
This is the final play in tetralogy (which also includes Richard II and two parts of Henry IV ) of the mature historical chronicles of Shakespeare, covering the period 1399-1420.
According to the chronology of events, another, early Shakespeare tetralogy follows the “Henry V” - about the Scarlet and White Rose War: “Henry VI” ( part 1 , part 2 , part 3 ) and “ Richard III ”.
Sources
Shakespeare used Holinshead's Chronicles and, in part, a brief, unexpressed play, Glorious Victories of Henry V, by an unknown author.
General characteristics
In England, "Henry V" is one of the most popular Shakespearean chronicles, the source of many quotes included in the English language. Patriotic motifs are clearly expressed in it (Henry’s monologue before the battle “Today is St. Crispian’s day” is famous), but the horrors of war are not hidden either. Along with serious heroic problems, the echoes of the comic line of both parts of Henry IV are noticeable in Henry V. Although Falstaff does not appear (from replicas of other characters, viewers learn about his death), there are a number of persons from his retinue called up for war: Bardolph, Pistol, Nim, a page boy.
The play contains quite a few replicas in French and puns for beating both English words with French characters and French English. The whole scene — Catherine’s teaching of French in English — is completely written in French. In addition, the Celtic (Welsh, Irish) and provincial accents of a number of characters are played out, which makes the play difficult enough to translate.
The prologue to the play, uttered by the actor (Shakespeare's “Chorus”), appeals to the audience with a request for leniency to the lack of scenery (“Will the Cockerel Scaffold in France accommodate the field? Will the helmets that inspire fear under the Agincourt contain a circle of wood? ..” )
Stages and adaptations
The play "Henry V" was repeatedly filmed and staged in theaters. The productions and adaptations of “Henry V” are often used as an allusion to modern wars: both in a patriotic vein ( staged by Laurence Olivier from the Second World War) and in anti-war (a number of productions of the late XX - early XXI centuries, including the version of the Royal National Theater 2003 with a hint of an invasion of Iraq). The lines from the king’s speech before the battle (“And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by ...”) became the leitmotif of the films “ Renaissance Man ”, “ Brothers in Arms ”. An adaptation of the play in 1989 earned her an Academy Award.
The fourth series of the first season of the television series " Empty Crown " (2012) is a film adaptation of the play, in the role of Henry V - Tom Hiddleston .
