Theater History

The history of the theater begins in 1777 when, on the occasion of the introduction of Tula to the rank of the provincial center, the first performance “It Should Be” was shown. In 1787, the theater was visited by Empress Catherine II .

In 1938, almost all the protagonists of the play “Anna Karenina” were accused by members of the “spy organization” and arrested, four were shot, among them was Anna Tomashevskaya, the leading actor. During the Great Patriotic War, the theater did not stop its work (except for the period of the state of siege of the city). Almost every day they gave two performances, traveled with concerts to military units and to the front line.

In 1970, a new theater building was built, in which it is still located. Architects - A. Krasilnikov, A. Popov, V. Schulrichter. The sculptural composition “Muses” on the facade is made of metal by A. Vasnetsov together with I. Vasnetsova and D. Shakhovsky [1] . In 1995, the theater was awarded the title of Academic. From 1995 to 2007 on the basis of the theater there was a branch of the Yaroslavl Theater Institute , twenty graduates of which are now employed in the repertoire.

In 2000, the theater became a laureate of the theater competition "Window to Russia". September 9, 2008, in front of the main entrance to the theater, after overhaul, a square was opened with an abundance of fountains [2] .
