Research Activity
In 1904, in a journal, and in 1906, a separate book was published by N. V. Nikolsky ’s study “ Public Education in the Chuvash ”, which, based on numerous sources, deeply highlights the history of literacy among the Chuvash from the 16th to the 18th century. In the same years he published ethnographic descriptions compiled by land surveyor K. Milkovich in the 18th century, “ Life and Beliefs of the Mordovians in 1783 ”, “ Life and Beliefs of the Tatars of the Simbirsk Governorate in 1783 ”, and “ Milkovich's Notes on the Chuvash of the 18th Century ” from detailed prefaces and commentaries. These publications were of great importance for ethnographic science. A considerable scientific and practical value for its time was represented by a large (640 p.) “ Russian-Chuvash Dictionary ” compiled by N. Nikolsky with an outline of the grammar of the Chuvash language, published in Kazan in 1909. In the same year, his book “ Folk medicine among the peoples of the Volga region ” was published in Moscow.
The first scientist from the Chuvash, who received master's degree (1913) and doctor of historical sciences (1947), academic title of professor (1918). He made a great contribution to the development of questions of history, ethnography, folklore, and the language of the Chuvash and other Volga peoples. The founder of the first newspaper in the Chuvash language " Hypar ", was the editor-publisher of its first 22 issues. Also known as a musician and connoisseur of traditional medicine. Articles about N. V. Nikolsky are included in the Chuvash , Tatar and Mari encyclopedias .
One of the cultural figures, enlightenment and science of the Chuvash , who even in pre-revolutionary times were able to advance against the national policy of the Russian Empire .
Political activities
N.V. Nikol'skii was the initiator and leader of the “Society of Small Nations of the Volga Region” created in Kazan on March 22, 1917. He was one of the organizers and leaders of the All-Russian Chuvash Congress in Simbirsk on June 20-28, 1917, after which its influence in the Chuvash national movement declined due to the arrival of more radical leaders to the leadership. Nikolsky did not approve the coming to power of the Bolsheviks, but did not participate in the fight against the new government. Until the end of his life, he did not hide religiousness, ignored the Marxist methodology, which was the reason for the repression and interruptions in scientific activity.
Journalistic Activities
In January 1906, N. V. Nikolsky began publishing the first newspaper in the Chuvash language, " Hypar ." In May 1907, by the decision of the authorities, the newspaper was closed. In May 1917, N. V. Nikolsky resumed publication of the newspaper "Hypar".
