Serdeşt ( Persian سردشت , Kurdish سەردەشت ) is a city in the north-west of Iran in the province of Western Azerbaijan , located south of Lake Urmia , 10 km from the border with the Iraqi province of Sulaymaniyah . The administrative center of the same name shakhrestan . The population is 50 thousand people, mainly Kurds .

He gained fame as the first city massively attacked by chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq war . During the attack on June 10, 1987 , 10 people died, more than 600 were seriously injured. At least a quarter of the city’s population today suffers from diseases caused by shelling. In 2004, Iran opened a criminal case against the US government, accusing it of encouraging Saddam Hussein's war crimes. The court decided to pay $ 600 million in compensation to the residents of Serdest. [one]
