History

The first mention of him occurs in 1761 in the Libro de Ordenanza de los toques militares de la Infantería Española by Manuel de Espinosa, where he is called La Marcha Granadera ( March of the Grenadiers ).

In 1770, King Charles III (Carlos III) established La Marcha Granadera as the official anthem, which began to be performed during all official ceremonies. Since it was constantly performed during events attended by members of the royal family, the Spaniards began to consider it their national anthem and called it the “ Royal March ”.

During the Second Republic, El Himno de Riego ( Riego Anthem ) became the national anthem instead of the Royal March. However, at the end of the Civil War, Francisco Franco restored the “ Royal March ” as a national anthem, replacing its name with the former “ March of the Grenadiers ”.

After King Juan Carlos I came to power and the Constitution was adopted in 1978 , maestro Francisco Grau was commissioned to create a new anthem arrangement, which is used today, and the name “ Grenadiers March ” has been replaced by the current one.

In October 1997, “ La Marcha Real ” was approved by the country's national anthem.

One version was used during the reign of King Alfonso XIII (the author of the text is Eduardo Marquina), and the other during the period of Francisco Franco (the author of the text is José María Pemán), until the establishment of a democratic system in the country.

Now there is a version of 2008 (author - Paulino Cubero).

Spanish text

¡Viva España!
Cantemos todos juntos
con distinta voz
y un solo corazón
¡Viva España!
desde los verdes valles
al inmenso mar,
un himno de hermandad
Ama a la patria
pues sabe abrazar,
bajo su cielo azul,
pueblos en libertad
Gloria a los hijos
que a la historicia dan
justicia y grandeza
democracia y paz.

Translation into Russian [1]

Long live Spain!
We sing it all together.
In different voices
But with one heart.
Long live Spain!
From the green valleys
To the endless sea
Anthem of the Brotherhood!
Love the Fatherland
Knowing how to embrace
Under the blue sky
Free peoples.
Glory to the sons
What gave the story
Justice and greatness
Democracy and peace.

Version at Alfonso XIII

The author of the text is Eduardo Marquina.

Gloria, gloria, corona de la Patria,
soberana luz
que es oro en tu color.
Vida, vida, futuro de la Patria,
que en tus ojos es
abierto corazón.
Púrpura y oro: bandera inmortal;
en tus colores, juntas, carne y alma están.
Púrpura y oro: querer y lograr;
Tú eres, bandera, el signo del humano afán.
Gloria, gloria, corona de la Patria,
soberana luz
que es oro en tu color.
Púrpura y oro: bandera inmortal;
en tus colores, juntas, carne y alma están.

Francisco Franco Version

The author of the text (and possibly the translation) is José María Pemán I.

Spanish text

¡Viva España!
alzad los brazos, hijos
del pueblo español,
que vuelve a resurgir.
Gloria a la patria
que supo seguir
sobre el azul del mar
el caminar del sol.
¡Triunfa, España!
Los yunques y las ruedas
cantan al compás
del himno de la fe.
Juntos con ellos
cantemos de pie
la vida nueva y fuerte
del trabajo y paz.

Russian translation

Long live Spain,
raise your hands
sons of the Spanish people
that was reborn again.
Glory to the Motherland
that managed to follow
on the blue sea
behind the sun
Win Spain!
Anvils and wheels
sing to the beat
hymn of faith.
With them
singing
strong and new life
work and peace.
