Biography
The son of a famous German linguist and researcher of religions German Alexander Diels .
In 1899 he graduated from the University of Berlin , where since 1906 he was a professor; since 1916 , professor at Kiel University .
Major works
Diels proposed in 1927 a method for the dehydrogenation of organic compounds using selenium without changing their carbon skeleton; dehydrogenated cholesterol and other sterols .
In 1928 , together with Alder, he discovered diene synthesis and obtained using this method a large number of organic compounds of various classes.
Recognition
- 1931 -
- 1950 - Nobel Prize in Chemistry , together with Alder ("For the discovery and development of diene synthesis").
