Jan Zhelezny ( Czech Jan Železný ; June 16, 1966 , Mlada Boleslav , Czechoslovakia ) - an outstanding Czechoslovak and Czech javelin thrower , three - time Olympic champion and three - time world champion . On May 25, 1996, he set a world record in Jena , which still remains unsurpassed (98 m 48 cm).

He won the Olympic Games in 1992 , 1996 and 2000 , took second place at the 1988 Olympics . He won “gold” at the world championships 1993, 1995 and 2001 and “bronze” in 1987 and 1999. Due to the long and very successful performance, it is considered the best javelin thrower of all time.
In addition to the world (98.48 m), Zhelezny holds the world championship record (92.80 m). From the second result (93.09 m Finn Aki Parviainen ) his world record is more than 5 meters apart. Jan Zhelezny made 53 throws for 90 meters, which as of September 23, 2007 was more than 40 such throws of all other javelin throwers combined [1] . He was recognized as the athlete of the year in the world (2000) and Europe (1996, 2000), the best athlete in the Czech Republic (1993, 1995, 2000, 2001)
Jan Zhelezny completed his career in 2006 in his native Mlada Boleslav. Since 2006 at the coaching work.
In honor of Jan, the asteroid (9224) of Zhelezny is named [2] .
