Biography
Her father, Thomas Dudley ( 1576 - 1653 ), was in England the administrator of Earl of Lincoln. In 1628, Anna married Simon Bradstreet ( 1603 - 1697 ). In 1630, both families moved to America on the ship "Arabella". Swimming lasted three months. In the New World, his father became the governor of the Massachusetts colony, subsequently he was replaced by Anna's husband in this post.
Anna was notable for poor health, and she had a difficult trip. In 1666, the family suffered a severe fire in which, among other things, almost completely burned out the library of Anna, who received a good education (the library had 800 volumes on history, theology, medicine, and political science); the fire is dedicated to one of Bradstreet's poems. After these events, she developed tuberculosis, she lost her daughter. She was supported by faith, will, and the help of loved ones.
Creativity
Bradstreet's only lifetime book of poems, The Tenth Muse, which recently appeared in America, was published without the author's name in London ( 1650 ). She prepared the publication of Selected Poems, including the most famous poem, “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” which was published in America after her death ( 1678 ). The religious poems of Bradstreet were well-known among the first Puritan settlers who copied them, but later became forgotten and printed only in the middle of the XIX century.
Recognition
The poetess is dedicated to the poem by J. Berryman, “Tribute to Anna Bradstreet” (journal. Publication - 1953 , separate publ. - 1956 ), highly praised by American criticism.
