Biography

Born in Odessa on December 11 (23), 1892 , during the reign of Alexander III . As a boy-boy on a ship of his father-captain, he walked around many port cities of the Mediterranean. In 1905, a high school student and his mother rescued Jewish neighbors during the Black Hundred pogroms in Odessa. He graduated from the 5th Odessa gymnasium in 1909.
