History

The initiators of the creation of the magazine, the first issue of which was published March 15 (27), 1848 , were advanced Russian naval officers led by Fyodor Petrovich Litke . At that time, he headed the Maritime Scientific Committee.

The publication of the journal contributed a lot to transformations in the Russian fleet: the transition from a sailing fleet to a steam fleet, the modernization of naval weapons and shipbuilding . Over the course of more than one and a half-century history, the magazine has repeatedly become a progressive publication, covering acute socio-political issues, or has turned into a narrow departmental military-technical publication.

The journal’s tasks have always included: “disseminating useful information between the fleet’s employees and, in general, in the maritime service, the necessary knowledge in the marine part”, as well as studying and disseminating naval and technical knowledge in the fleet, covering events of the “past times in all fleets”, publication of biographies of prominent figures of the Russian fleet, a description of "extraordinary incidents" and shipwrecks, information about sailing ships and squadrons, the basics of operational art and tactics.

Over the years of Russia's service, articles in the Maritime Digest were made by: V. von Glazenap , A. N. Ostrovsky , I. A. Goncharov , A. F. Pisemsky , V. I. Dal , K. M. Stanyukovich , N I. Pirogov , E. H. Lentz , B. S. Jacobi , K. V. Ushinsky , F. G. Toll , E. V. Putyatin , S. O. Makarov , G. I. Butakov , A. N Krylov , S.K. Dzhevetsky , Yu. M. Shokalsky , etc.

Ushinsky , V.I. Dahl , I.A. Goncharov , A.N. Ostrovsky , A.F. Pisemsky , K.M. Stanyukovich . At one time , A.I. Herzen , N.P. Ogaryov , N.A. Dobrolyubov , N.A. Nekrasov , M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin highly praised the magazine.

In 1856 the circulation of the magazine was 6 thousand, in 1935 - 5 thousand, in 2010 - 9.5 thousand copies.

In the second half of the XIX century - the beginning of the XX century G. I. Butakov , K. N. Posyet , S. S. Lesovsky , I. A. Shestakov , S. O. Makarov , D. I. Mendeleev , A. N. Krylov and others.

In the period from 1848 to 1917, "Marine Collection" was published in St. Petersburg (Petrograd), after 1917 to the present is published in Moscow .

In Soviet times, the magazine became the scientific and theoretical journal of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Navy, and then the USSR Navy.

Already on November 29, 1917, a decree was signed on the transfer of the magazine to the Naval General Staff and the appointment of leadership from the revolutionary sailors. And the chief editor soon became a former non-commissioned officer of the destroyer "Horseman", radio telegraphist S. P. Lukashevich.

In 1980, "Marine Collection" was awarded the Order of the Red Star .

Quotes

  • “I would like to see in the Maritime Digest a series of moral and philosophical arguments written very boldly and strongly, accessible to everyone in language, with the goal, on the one hand, of discrediting the shortcomings that we are forced to recognize between naval officers and officers, which should be branded with public ridicule, and on the other hand, indicate and explain how certain objects and relationships should be understood. ”1st category will include: censure of the system of lies, manners to show the goods face, show unprecedented merits and conceals l shortcomings, omissions and mistakes; a way of looking at state property, settlements with coal and firewood, the system of punishing lower ranks and handling them, etc. An explanation of how to look at awards and proceedings, the attitude of comrades, etc. .. It would be advisable to condemn evil and praise good with a taunting mockery, but praise smartly, not cloyingly. " Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich [3]
