The Arizona Gila-toothed [1] , or the habitation [2] ( lat. Heloderma suspectum ) is a venomous lizard of the gazelle family.

The English name " Hila Monster" ( born Gila monster ) was given to her by the river Hila in Arizona .

Appearance
A rather large lizard up to 60 cm long, of which 15–17 cm falls on the tail . The weight of the housing can reach 2 kg. The color is variegated: orange-yellow, orange-red, red-brown or whitish-yellow spots are located on a dark-brown main background. Dark and light transverse stripes alternate on the tail. Color and pattern changeable. Sometimes a dark background prevails, and a bright pattern is expressed in the form of separate, more or less properly arranged spots and stripes. In other cases, the animals may be orange-red or brownish-yellow with separate dark spots. Young individuals are colored more contrast and brighter.
Spread
Residences are distributed in the southwestern United States in the states of Utah , Nevada , Arizona and New Mexico , in the San Bernardino District ( California ), as well as in northwestern Mexico from Sonora to the north of Sinaloa .
It is found in arid areas, mainly among the thickets of cacti , bushes , grass ; occurs on stony slopes at the bottom of canyons.
Power
It feeds mainly on eggs of birds and reptiles (especially the eggs of the turtle Gopherus agassizii ), as well as birds, lizards and small mammals ( rabbits , mice and squirrels ). The mass of food that an adult cannibal is able to absorb in a single dose can reach up to 35% of its body weight. With abundant nutrition quickly accumulates fat in the tail. The lizard eats no more than 10 times a year [3] .
Reproduction
In July – August, the female lays in a burrow from 2 to 12 eggs, whose length is 6.0–7.5 cm, width 2.5–3.0 cm. The incubation period lasts 35–55 days. Young lizards 10–12 cm long appear in late August - early September.
Security Status
The number of habitation is relatively stable, but sometimes decreases due to the destruction of habitats. The species is listed in the IUCN Red List and CITES Convention on International Trade. Adolescent hunting and trapping of these lizards in nature is prohibited in the United States.
Classification
The species has two subspecies :
- Heloderma suspectum suspectum - distributed in the southern part of the species range ;
- Heloderma suspectum cinctum - occupies the northern part of the range (found mainly in the Mojave Desert ).
In culture
Anthropomorphic Arizona Ida-Tooth Chance ( Eng. Chance ) - the official mascot of the NHL Vegas Golden Knights . It was first presented on October 13, 2017 before the second home game of Vegas vs. Detroit Red Wings [4] .
