History

WordPerfect Library

GroupWise emerged in 1986 as an extension of the WordPerfect package called WordPerfect Library 1.0 , which at the time was powered by Data General and Amiga . The product was developed by WordPerfect Corporation in conjunction with some of its major clients (including the US Department of Justice ). At that time, the WordPerfect Library did not include email, but consisted of a personal calendar, a text editor, a notebook, a calculator, a file manager, and a shell. In 1987 , the WordPerfect Library was ported to the PC platform under DOS [2] .

In 1988 , with the advent of email support and the possibility of scheduling collaboration within the same server, the product was renamed WordPerfect Office 2.0 .

In 1990, WordPerfect Office 3.0 was released . Clients for Macintosh and UNIX were added, and, very importantly, support for the exchange of mail, calendars and scheduler between several servers.

WordPerfect Office 3.1 was released in 1992 , adding Windows to the list of supported clients and positioning itself as the only cross-platform integrated collaboration environment for DOS, Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, and VAX / VMS .

WordPerfect Office 4.0 was launched in 1993 . The new version had a completely new interface , and database technology was used to store messages. Other key features included job management, the ability to create rules, remote replication / synchronization , centralized management of multiple servers, and 32-bit server capabilities. The product was released simultaneously for all platforms, and contained many other innovative additions. Gateways for SMTP , X.400 , fax and pager have been added.

Novell GroupWise

WordPerfect was acquired by Novell in 1994 and server agents were ported to the NetWare operating system. At the same time, WordPerfect Office was renamed GroupWise and integrated with Novell Directory Services (now Novell eDirectory ). In 1996, Novell sold the majority of WordPerfect applications to Corel Corporation , but decided to retain GroupWise.

GroupWise 4.1 Client for Windows

GroupWise 4.1 is the first release released by Novell in 1994. Adding NLM ( English ) and gateways - expanded the capabilities of the server. Also in this version there were WWW links to objects, the ability for third-party developers to create and save elements, deep integration with Netware, SNMP , the ability to service the server without the need for shutdown, integrated mailing lists , and the ability to remotely access the system through a touch-tone telephone.

GroupWise WebAccess was launched in 1996, an add-on that allows you to access GroupWise from a Web browser .

GroupWise 5 in 1996 brought a new, single, customizable workspace for managing all kinds of objects and messages (Universal Mailbox concept), as well as full support for collaborative document management. GroupWise Imaging has made it possible to view, edit, and forward scanned documents. Also, users have become available features such as shared folders.

In 1997, GroupWise 5.2 added extensive support for Internet protocols, including IMAP4 , LDAP , POP3 , URL links, and native TCP / IP support. Also in this version was added GroupWise Workflow.

GroupWise 6 Client for Windows

In the spring of 2001, a version of GroupWise 6 was released. GW Monitor, quotas, new backup features and other improvements to the client and server part appeared in it.

With the release of GroupWise 6.5 in 2003, the GroupWise Messenger 1.0 instant messaging system, SSL support, and spam filtering appeared. The 2004 version of GroupWise 6.5 for Linux added Linux to the list of supported server platforms and clients for Linux and MacOS.

In February 2005, Novell announced GroupWise’s development plan for several years ahead, which includes three new versions (in 2005, 2006, and 2008, respectively) with end-user, administrative, API , scalability, new backup and etc., thus trying to maintain GroupWise's market share and compete with Microsoft Exchange [3] [4]

GroupWise 7 , codenamed Sequoia , released in 2005, brought a completely new Windows client and improved WebAccess web client, support for SOAP and IPv6 . A complete list of changes can be found in the documentation on the official website ( What's New in GroupWise 7 ).

GroupWise 8 , codenamed Bonsai , was released on November 17, 2008. He brought an even more improved client and added many new features. Now you can use OpenOffice and Microsoft Word as an editor for new messages, which gives the user the opportunity to use all the functionality of these programs (OLE, spell checking, text formatting, etc.). Autosave incomplete emails through customizable time lapse. The ability to open a personal calendar for general access to the Internet. Integration with Novell Teaming. A complete list of changes can be found in the documentation on the official website ( What's New in GroupWise 8 ). Groupwise 8 SP1 was released in August 2009. Groupwise 8 SP2 was released in July 2010. Groupwise 8 SP3 was launched in June 2012.

GroupWise 2012 , codenamed Ascot , was released on January 23, 2012 [5] (originally planned to be released before the end of 2010 ). The new version discontinued support for NetWare.

In the Windows client, among other changes, the calendar and address book have been improved, for example, users can now add their photo to the system address book. Also added integration with third-party applications, such as Skype , which allows you to make calls, send SMS and see the presence of a contact on the network directly from GroupWise. Also, it became possible to open shared folders with subfolders.

No changes were planned in the clients for Linux and Mac, instead, all efforts were focused on significantly improving the functionality of WebAccess (including new templates for convenient operation from the web browser of modern mobile devices, in particular the iPad ).

Support for authentication through Microsoft Active Directory (without eDirectory) was planned at Ascot, but the implementation was subsequently transferred to the next version of GroupWise, code-named Windermere . [6] [7] [8] [9]

GroupWise 2014 , codenamed " Windermere ", was released on April 3, 2014 [10] . In the new version, there was a complete transition of system administration to the web interface (ConsoleOne can no longer be used), updating the GroupWise client interface, translating all agents to 64 bits, significant improvements to the installation interface and updating the server part of GroupWise, simplifying automatic client updating, new API for developers , WebAccess improvements (including auto-updating of the list of letters), as well as the ability to choose whether to work together with the Active Directory or eDirectory directory service , or without a directory service (previously the product only worked in conjunction with eDirectory) [11] [9] [12] .

With the release of GroupWise 2014, the license agreement (EULA) has changed. In particular, GroupWise is now licensed by the number of mailboxes, and not by the number of users. In addition, a new type of license “Inactive Licenses” is provided for inactive mailboxes, as well as the conditions for using GroupWise for free for testing purposes are described [13] .

Future

The next version will be called GroupWise 2014 R2 (Release 2). Codename: "Cornell". [14]
