eDirectory is a hierarchical , object-oriented database that represents all the organization’s resources in a logical tree. Resources can be employees, positions, servers, workstations , applications, printers , services, groups , etc. Effective management of global and precise access to resources is achieved through the use of dynamic inheritance of rights and the use of mechanisms of equivalence of rights. Access rights for objects in the tree are determined during the execution of the request and depend on what rights are assigned to the object explicitly, through rights equivalents and due to the location (context) of the object in the tree.

Content

Distribution

EDirectory supports partitioning the tree. The section is a subtree of the general network tree. To define a tree, you need to select an object in the general tree, which will be the root object of this section.

Replicability

Replicability in the context of Novell eDirectory is understood as copying and replicating partitions to any number of servers to increase reliability and reduce load. Synchronization of copies of these partitions (replicas) on each server is performed periodically. At the same time, only changed data is transmitted over the network, which helps to minimize traffic in local and global networks. Any server can be the main one for the data of the tree that it stores (if the copy of the data is not declared as a read-only copy). In addition, copies can be filtered to include only individual data to increase speed. For example, a copy of a section may contain only user names and their phone numbers for use in the corporate address book. Replication schedules are supported; replication traffic shaping.

Other key benefits include the integrity of the links engine, multi-master synchronization, and the modular authentication architecture. Are the subject of patents.

Supported Access Methods

EDirectory data can be accessed through LDAP , XML , DSML , SOAP , ODBC , JDBC , JNDI , EJB , ActiveX, and ADSI . The size of the database in some implementations exceeds 1 billion objects.

In 2005, eDirectory was still used on the CNN website ( http://www.cnn.com ). Pay attention to the bottom of the website page. Personalize and customize web content using NDS eDirectory for CNN

Direction Générale des Impôts , the French tax authority, uses Novell eDirectory as a taxpayer data warehouse . Currently, the catalog contains data from several hundred thousand people. At the time of completion of the project, this number should grow to 35 million (almost all French taxpayers).

TransUnion , one of the largest credit history bureaus in the world, uses eDirectory to personalize web pages for 10-12 million customers annually .
