Biography

In 644, Oswin was elected king of Deira . He was gentle and peaceful, and more devout than brave. According to the Distress of the Honorable King Oswin was tall and handsome, pleasant to be treated, and generous to everyone, noble and simple. Everyone loved him for his royal dignity, which was manifested in his guise, and in speeches, and in deeds, and noble people from almost all provinces came to serve him. Among all the virtues with which, so to speak, he was especially gifted, humility was especially prominent.

When the king of Bernice, Oswiu planned to take his kingdom from him, Oswin entered the war with him only if absolutely necessary. However, he could not come to terms with this, thinking that shedding blood for his own quarrel is a great evil. In this mood, he furtively fled from his army and with only one faithful warrior came to the house of Count Hunwold, whom he considered his friend, with the intention that he would later retire to the monastery. However, this treacherous friend betrayed him to Oswiu, who ordered a prefect named Edilvin to kill him in order to take possession of his kingdom. Oswin was killed on August 20, 651, in a place called Ingetling (now in Yorkshire ).

Subsequently, Oswiu, tormented by remorse, ordered to lay a monastery on the very spot where Oswin was killed. Perhaps it was thanks to the story of the Honorable Beda that the king was virtuous that Osvin was canonized in the 8th century; in Tainmouth , where he was buried, a church was built in which, according to legend, miracles of healing took place.

Ethelwald , son of King Oswald of Northumbria, became the successor of Oswin, who ruled seven years in Deira.
