Despondency ( dr. Greek ἀκηδία - carelessness, carelessness [1] ; lat. Acedia ) - a state of apathy and depression, a mood in which a person is not interested in his position and what is happening around, may not be able to fulfill his life responsibilities; hopeless sadness; oppressive boredom [2] . Accompanied by a general breakdown . Great depression is characteristic of depression , but is not equivalent to it [3] .

In Christianity, despondency is one of the eight main sins , and subsequently in the Roman Catholic tradition one of the seven deadly sins .

According to John Climacus , “despondency is a relaxation of the soul, exhaustion of the mind, neglect of monastic deed, hatred of the vow , the gratifier of the worldly , the lies of God, as if He was merciless and inhumane” ( Ladder 13: 2).
