Gluttony ( lat. Gula , ancient Greek. Γαστριμαργία ) - immoderation and greed in food. It is a type of gluttony .

In Catholic theology, gluttony is also one of the seven major sins (sin against the second commandment ). Thomas Aquinas attributed to gluttony ( gula ) not every desire for food ( appetitum ), but only that which is incompatible with the "order of reason" ( ordine rationis ). Together with debauchery is classified as "carnal sin" ( lat. Vitia carnalia ).
In the Orthodox tradition, gluttony, along with a predilection for refined taste sensations, is the first and fundamental of eight sinful passions and is called gluttony [1] [2] .
The Rev. Abba Dorofey in the “Conspiracy Instructions” divided the sin of gluttony into two components:
- Gastrimargy ( Greek: grovel ) is the desire of a person to simply fill his or her womb, without particularly paying attention to the taste of food.
- Lemargia ( Greek horticultural ) - the desire of a person to enjoy the consumption of tasty food, the pleasure of taste [3] .
In Orthodoxy, it is believed that every piece of food eaten beyond the satisfaction of hunger and every breath of moisture drunk after the satisfaction of thirst, just for pleasure, is gluttony [1] [4] .
In the classification of the seven deadly sins of the German inquisitor Peter Binsfeld, gluttony was personified by Beelzebub [5] .

In medieval sculpture it is depicted in the cycles of “Virtues and Vices”, also found in the Renaissance, for example, on tapestries.
The allegorical figure of Gluttony can be of any gender. This is a fat man, eating and eating. Sometimes vomiting. Can be crowned with a grape wreath, like Bacchus, and keep a fruit platter. Animal satellites: a greedy wolf, a pig, a honey lover a bear and a hedgehog, who, according to legends, collected fruits on his needles [6]

Since the ancient Greeks mostly ate with their hands, the famous Greek glutton Philoxenus tempered his fingers for hours, dropping them into almost boiling water so that he could always take the most tasty, hottest pieces of food first [7] .
