Biography
Enfrith was the son of Ethelfrith, king of Northumbria, and his first wife Babba. After the death of his father in 616, Enfrit fled with his half-brothers Oswald and Oswiu to the Picts Kingdom , where all three converted to Christianity.
When Edwin , king of Northumbria , was killed in October 633 at the Battle of Hatfield , Enfrit returned to his homeland and was proclaimed king of Bernition , while Deira came under the rule of Osric , Edwin’s cousin. According to the testimony of the Trouble of the Honorable , upon assuming the throne, Enfrit retired from Christianity and returned to paganism . Probably the first time Enfrit maintained allied relations with Cadwallon , the king of Gwynedd and the strongest monarch of Northern England, but soon there was a gap between them. According to the " Church history of the people of England " of the Bede Honorable, when Enfrit arrived to Cadwallon in October 634 "with only twelve loyal people to make peace," the king of the Britons killed him. Bernitius, like Deira a little earlier (in the summer of the same year), was ruled by Cadwallon.
It is known that Enfritt was married to the princess of Picta , the sister of King Nehton II , from whom he had a son Talorkan , who inherited the Pictish throne in 653 . It is possible that his daughter was married to the king of Strathclyde Beli ap Nehton [2] .
