Coronation coins and tokens

Coronation tokens are coin-shaped tokens of a round shape, without an ear.

Always in the shadow of various coronation medals and ruble coins, coin-like (without ear) tokens were issued for the coronations of 11 of the 14 emperors of Russia. (There were no issues for the coronation of Peter I , John VI and Peter III .) Surveys of coronation tokens, apparently, have not yet been. Even their parameters in many directories are approximate.

Only in recent years has it become clear that coronation tokens are interesting objects of study for numismatists. The tokens issued before the coronation of Alexander III are close in weight to the dime, 25- or 20-penny. In the 18th - early 19th centuries , they also had a cord-shaped edge, characteristic of coins. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, after coronation they were used for some time as signs of payment, at least vodka (that is, they were coin-like surrogates of money). The tokens issued for the coronation of Alexander III and Nicholas II are difficult to equate to any face value (it was during the periods of their reign that the coronation rubles were minted). Nevertheless, these tokens are a continuation of the traditional series. Most of the serious collectors in their collections, among the coins of each reign, put a coronation token - an “entrance ticket” to the “exposition hall” of coins of this reign. The price of tokens of six reigns of the late XVIII - early XX centuries - 80 - 150 [ what? ] . K = 4 [ clarify ] . Early tokens are much less common, they cost 300-500 [ what? ] .

Information about the few gold coronation tokens is also not systematized, but it is known that they were issued in the weight of a chervonets (from Catherine I to Catherine II ) or 5-ruble (under Alexander I ). In foreign catalogs, these tokens are placed among the coins on a par with ducats of different countries (also not having a denomination). The price range has not been determined, but depending on the reign and condition, gold tokens cost from 2,500 to 10,000 [ what? ] .

Many collectors believe that tokens issued on the death of the emperor (“exit” ticket) have no less reason to be included in numismatic collections, their prices are about the same level as “coronation” ones.
