Gaggio

Gadzho , or gadzho (plural "gadje") - in Gypsy philosophy the designation of a person who does not have romanipe . Such may even be an ethnic gypsy , brought up outside the framework of gypsy culture, lacking gypsy qualities and not striving to belong to the gypsy community. But still, usually "gadzho" practically means "non-gypsy." The word itself comes from the Indian word "gavja" - "villager" (the ancestors of the gypsies, like the gypsies, were artists and craftsmen) and is cognate to the gypsy word "woof" ( village ).

Relations between Gypsies and Gajes by Gypsies are hardly regulated by the “ Gypsy Law ”. Two basic rules (recommendations) read: “When dealing with a gajj, a gypsy is better to adhere to the rules, laws and restrictions of non-Gypsy society” and “treat a gajo the way he treats you.” Gypsy law also recommends avoiding marriages with the gajj, although it does not prohibit it.

Some of the rules of the “gypsy law” are the same for relations with the gajj and with the gypsies. This includes a taboo on actions such as murder , rape , causing serious physical harm, creating conditions that could lead to death , here are the rules for communicating with a guest, prescribing care for his comfort.

The word, when used, can have a hint of condescension, superiority (a gypsy over not involved in the romanipe), but is not used as a derogatory gypsy. There are separate words for “bad gajo”.

Borrowing the term in other languages

The word gajo (in the form gaĝo) is borrowed in a similar meaning to the international language of Esperanto . In some texts you can find it as a short designation of people who do not know Esperanto and are not familiar with the realities of the Esperanto movement (see eo: Krokodili # cite note-2 ).
