Greek νόμισμα, νόμισματος - “established custom, generally accepted order; coin” ) is an auxiliary historical discipline that studies the history of coinage and monetary circulation. From numismatics as a science, one should distinguish numismatic collecting, or collecting coins .

The History of Numismatics as a Science
Interest in coins originated in the Renaissance . The Italian poet Francesco Petrarch was a great lover of antique coins. By the middle of the XVI century , according to the calculations of H. Goltzius , in Europe there were already 950 medical rooms. In 1738, Professor I.-G. gave the first lecture on coins at the University of Halle. Schulze .
As an independent science, numismatics took shape only in the 19th century . A great contribution to this was made by the specialist in antique coins I.-I. Eckel, specialist in medieval coins J. Mader , as well as I.-J. Leitzman , J. Friedlander and G. Grote . The latter combined numismatics and the science of money, which was the beginning of the transformation of numismatics into a socio-historical science [2] .
Since the XIX century, numismatists began to study economic processes according to coin finds [3] . Numismatics is usually classified as one of the “auxiliary historical disciplines” .
