The basis of the flag was the modified Blue (English) stern flag , on the panel of which the state emblem is located. The emblem is an image of a Piping Shrike bird with raised wings. It is believed that the logo was designed by Robert Craig .
Previous Flags
The first flag of South Australia was approved in 1870 . It was also based on a modified English stern flag , on which, against the black disk, the constellation of the Southern Cross and two guiding stars, Alpha and Beta Centauri, were depicted.
South Australia adopted the second version of the flag in 1876 : the base remains the same, but the emblem has changed. This time she portrayed the goddess Britain (a woman in fluttering clothes with a shield in her hand), symbolizing the first settlers, who was met by an aborigine sitting on a rocky shore with a spear in her hand. On the rock behind the aborigine, one could discern the silhouette of a kangaroo. This flag was adopted at the request of the British Colonial Office , which believed that the old version was too reminiscent of the Flag of New Zealand and the Flag of Victoria .
